A Diary from a Dead Planet Called Earth

Entry 1: Date unknown

Hello, I am Jessica, I live on a chunk of a long dead planet called Earth.

Thousands of years have passed since the meteor hit, crumbling our wonderful planet into dozens of moons. It was a sad day for us. From that point forward, our technology was lost and we lived in caves. We feared the darkness and the cold, clinging to molten rock, building crude settlements. But most of all, we feared the surface, cold and unforgiving, with little atmosphere to speak of.

Entry 2: 3 orbital cycles since Entry 1

I've been using Entry 1 as a method to record time. Before Earth crumbled, we used an objective standard to record time, and that was our orbital cycle, so I'm using Entry 1 as a start-date, more or less, and measuring what's left of this planet's orbital cycles around its own axis through a tiny porthole on a derelict submarine

Entry 3: 5 orbital cycles since Entry 1

Today Stephen gave me a gift, that was thoughtful of him. However crude as it was, it was a gift from a friend, and I'll cherish this necklace for as long as I live. He says that me having it means that I'm officially part of his tribe. I hope I get to see his settlement. This synthesizer is breaking down as well. I won't be able to make any food without him.

Entry 4: 8 orbital cycles since Entry 1

It's funny. I realized how much we rely on remnants of technology, even in our tribal state. Stephen let me into his settlement, and we took parts from my old synthesizer to fix his. He's also given me a job to guard the derelict submarine blocking the cave entrance and make sure no one depressurizes the cave by opening it. It's interesting, how there's a hydroponics bay in there. There are plants inside. I guess that's why we have oxygen in here. They must've put some kind of mechanism in it that harvests oxygen from the plants and carbon dioxide from the people.

Entry 5: 9 orbital cycles since Entry 1

My flashlight died, I had to get new batteries from Stephen. He's really falling for me. He just gives me whatever I want whenever I want.

When I got back to the airlock, I saw something horrible. Outside the porthole, was a creature... oh god... it was hideous... it was wearing this suit with a bulbous helmet, but I could make out the features through it. It only had

two legs, and only two arms. It didn't even have three eyes! Or antennae! It had this pointy... growth, on it's face, with two holes which I can only presume are for breathing, and it had this swollen mouth with an unhealthy pink hue. It was near a strange cone shaped vehicle, from which emerged another one, carrying a metal rod adorned with a red, white and blue cloth.

I'm sorry Stephen, I had to do this. I opened the airlock, what I saw was something I couldn't unsee. It was too much...

We found this diary near a hunk of metal protruding from lunar soil. I presume this was written in advance by one of our own men. How he wrote it in an ancient dialect of Sanskrit is unknown to me, but if anyone pulls this again, I'll have their ass court-martialed. - Commander [Name Redacted]
