A Night in the Dark

I've never had problems with sleeping in the dark. I however have found that I have had problems with waking to see myself surrounded by nothing but shrouds of darkness. To be as specific as possible I mean the dark that if you close your eyes in it, it would be as if you'd had a flash light right in front of your eyes. The worst night of all was March 1st 2004. It was a normal night for me, I'd fallen asleep and had the same dream I've always had, a void of black nothing. Then I'd normally wake up for no reason, and called for my dog and eventually fall back into slumber. This night though after waking up I wasn't able to fall back asleep and my dog didn't come. After waiting somewhere around five minutes I got up thinking I had let my dog outside and forgot to leave the door open enough so that he could get through the space made between the wall and the door. As I was walking through the back door I heard move in the living room. I walked inside and shut the door behind me. As I walked into the living room I saw something move on the coach.

I lifted the blanket covering what moved, as I lifted it I sighed with relief as it was my dog laying on the coach wagging her tail franticly since she was happy to see me. I laid on the coach since may body was to tiered to carry me back to my bed. As I began to lower myself onto the coach my body stopped pleading me to rest. As I lay, my eyes begin to adjust to the darkness and I see the beauty that it holds. The dusk of the night pierces through the window and merges with the shadows in the house to create an eerie yet pleasant and calming feeling. You may be thinking to yourself this isn't that bad, well this is only the start.

As soon as I was asleep I was not met with the black void the would have chosen over ever having a dream again, Instead I was met with a corridor. It was a well light, and seemed endless to the human eye. My dream self started walking and wouldn't stop. He walked for what felt to be hours. After the long period of silence the lights began to flicker and burn out in front of me one by one. Once all the lights where out something emerged from the black shadows. I cannot begin to describe the horror I felt when that.... Thing appeared in my dream. Its eyes are the sole reason I fear the dark to this day. Its eyes made the darkness I described earlier seem like a super nova. There is no word to describe the blankness of this creatures eyes. It started moving towards me, as I just stood there. It was in arm's length of me, and I still stood there doing nothing not even showing emotion. I couldn't do anything all I could do was watch as this creation of my fears kept getting closer and closer. It was about to touch me so I braced for the horror that I believed would unfold.

Instead of just letting it happen my dream self, ran away. I had dropped my cell phone but even my dream self knew it wasn't worth what that thing would do to me. As I ran I kept hearing it tell me to join it. I found a door and opened it. I jolted awake and began to laugh and smile. The only thing I could think was "its over". The worst part is that it wasn't over. My phone rang and as I read the caller ID the face of joy I was making turned into a face of pure and utter terror. It was the my cellphones ID. I didn't want to answer that phone, I would have rather ran into the closet and wept the rest of my life, but I had to know if I was afraid for nothing. I kept hoping I had left my phone somewhere and someone had called to tell me they found it. I answered and almost immediately regretted it. It was the voice from before and it said "Join us Shade". My name is Joshua Shade Myers and to this day I keep all my lights in my house on 24/7 even when I'm not home. But there's one room in the house that is always shrouded in dark shadows, and that's my bedroom, because one day I will conquer my fear of that creature, and I will return to that world.
