Angry Birds (Alternative Version)

Angry Birds. Ah yes, Angry Birds. It was a good and addictive game, but sadly deleted in early 2019 off of the App Store and the Google Play Store. Along with it, went Rio, Star Wars, Go!, Epic, and some others. At the time of writing this, it is currently almost ready for a re-release. Although I still have a special place in my heart for the series, there's a memory related to it that I don't quite have font memories of...

The Beginning

It was a sad time in 2019, because of the aforementioned event of the Angry Birds games being deleted. My phone broke in January of 2019, so I couldn't play archived versions of mobile games unless I wanted to use Bluestacks or any other phone emulator on my laptop. I decided to reinstall the first game in the series, now called 'Angry Birds Classic' to relive good memories. I planned to find some installers for the PC ports of the game I was looking for, but I decided to check my downloads folder to see if I had previously had anything left. And to my shock, I did! I found a folder named "anger bird". "Oddly named folder", I thought to myself. I opened the folder, and it contained a seemingly brand new copy of Angry Birds. I checked the config.lua file to see that it was basically the same as what I had remembered, but with a slight difference. Instead of saying the usual 'publisher = Rovio', it said 'publisher = UNDEFINED'. It also said "Developer Version 2.3.0, Do Not Distribute" at the bottom. "How the hell did I even get this if this was a legitimate beta? Or did I just put this in here for a quick, cheap laugh?", I pondered to myself. I closed the file, and I started the only executable file in the folder.

The Game

The game opened, but there was an error message. It said "C++ Exception Generated! Failed to open you/betrayed_us/nevercomeback.lua". I was confused. "Why would it even try to open a strange file like that?" I said to myself. There were three options. They are as follows: Abort, Retry, and Ignore. I clicked the Retry option, and the game booted up seemingly in it's usual way. The 2011 Rovio logo with the text at the bottom, then the splash screen introduced in late 2011. Once the game finished that process, it showed me something I had not quite remembered. I saw a different version of the main menu. The theme song was noticably deeper in pitch with the speed increasing and decreasing at random, and all of the buttons had rust on them. The Red Bird and the Minion Pig on the sides weren't there. The button with the door representing the exit button had the red cross button as if it was the sound button. I clicked on the settings button (you know, the one with the gear) and the fullscreen button wasn't present. I tried to click the audio button, but it didn't show the red symbol if I tried to click it, nor mute anything that I could hear. I clicked on the button with the I on it, and it seemed to work normally. It was just the normal credits as if it was the normal version of 2.3.0, albeit with a few differences. The End User Agreement button only had the End User part. The birds at the top (Red Bird, Yellow Bird, and Blue Bird) were more hurt than usual. Yellow Bird had his left eye shut, and his right eye looked like he was about to cry. Some of his tuffs looked like as if they were burnt or torn. Blue Bird had closed eyes and had those X symbols those old cartoons put on characters to signify that they were dead. Red Bird had more dents in the top part of his beak, and the bottom part had one or two. I scrolled to the bottom, and the Golden Egg that would be placed on the White Bird's corpse sprite wasn't present. White Bird's damaged sprite had both of his once light yellow cheeks dark purple, and he had no teeth. Replacing the spot of the teeth that were once there, was a damaged tongue. His eyes were cross-eyed.
