Barely Breathing

Author's note: This is my take on the Creepypasta "Binary DNA." I felt it had potential, but wasn't executed properly.

Lately, I have become quite interested in "paranormal files," such as smile.jpg, suicidemouse.avi, and barbie.jpg, that I have heard about all over the internet, and have decided to investigate them. I managed to strain each of these files down to the oldest and most authentic version I could find, along with others, such as needles.mp3, cradle.avi, and burningman.jpg. I downloaded each of them, respectively, and put them in a common folder, which I entitled Barely Breathing, as it felt somehow fitting for the contents, though I'm not exactly sure why. I began studying each file thoroughly, and I noticed that each of their binary sequences were similar, almost as if they were pieces of the same puzzle, individual, incomplete strands of a single "binary DNA," if you will.

As I was comparing the countless 1's and 0's, my computer shut down on its own. I turned it back on, slightly irritated, but not thinking much of it, as my computer is old and does this sort of thing all the time. When I went back to the folder I kept all the files in, I saw that they were gone now, with a lone survivor, though I didn't recognize it, nor did I ever remember downloading it. In the same manner as the folder it was stored in, the file was labeled BarelyBreathing.exe.

I decided to investigate the file before I would decide what to do with it. After looking over the binary sequences of this file, and looking through the notes I had taken on the original files, I noticed striking similarities to the codes of the originals. It was almost as if the incomplete strands of DNA meshed together into a single, cohesive strand.

Wary of executing the file, I stored the file on a flash drive. I gave the flash drive to a friend of mine, who was much more skilled with computers than I. He investigated the file as best he could, but not much came from it. He decided that the only thing left to do was execute it.

My friend works in an office building, so we decided to go over there and execute it on his work computer. When we arrived, he unlocked the doors, and warning me to be quiet, as he wasn't technically supposed to be here until Monday. We went to his cubicle on the third floor, and proceeded to start it up and put the flash drive in.

He turned to me, and we exchanged glances of resolve. He then turned back, and double-clicked the file. No turning back now.

For a while, nothing happened. Then, just as we began to suspect that the file had somehow become corrupted, a window came up. It was one of those black, command prompt windows. It said:

Transferring DNA to CPU.

After a period of time, another message popped up:

Transfer Complete.

After that, the window closed, and we were left there, wondering. Then, I saw the computer move a bit, but I didn't think much of it. Then, my friend turned, and asked if I had just seen what he had. I leaned in to have a closer look at it. Now, I thought I could hear something. I couldn't quite make it out, so I pressed my ear to the computer. I heard slight huffs and puffs, almost as if the computer was... barely breathing.
