Caroline's Final Moments
In February, a friend of mine gifted me with Portal 2 on Steam. Naturally, I was excited about it and dove headfirst into it. I loved it. The story, the new characters, everything.
Once I was in Old Aperture, I took my time exploring it, learning more about the mysterious Cave Johnson and his assistant Caroline. I overheard PotaDOS making her comments about the two and kinda laughed.
It was funny to hear her, of all things, freak out. However, she didn't calm down. In fact, she continuously shorted herself out throughout the 70's area of Aperture.
When we made it to the 80's area and Cave's lemon rant started to play, she was acting differently from the videos. Her reactions were sad, almost mournful.
By this time, I had figured out she was Caroline and just thought 'Oh, more of her memories are coming back'. As we got to the elevator, she started to speak. "Sir, I don't want to do this. No! Sir, listen to me, I don't want this!"
That made me stop. I knew the lines were taken out, but how did they ended up back in the game? The area I had stopped at was one I had never seen in any of the playthroughs: It was an office with a desk and chair that no human had stepped foot into for centuries.
It was Cave's office. I stopped by the desk and looked around. "How many times have I told you scientists?! I don't want to do this!"
I heard PotaDOS yell, "I know it was what Mr. Johnson wanted, but I don't want to go through with it!" I sat in shock as I listened to her have a one-sided argument.
"As acting CEO, I'm telling you to stop this at onc- What did you... Get off of me! Let me go this instant or you're all fired! Get your hands off of me!" She shorted out after that.
I moved to the next area: a broken down lab. She soon came back online.
"Let me out of this! I don't want to go through with this!...
I want to be with Mr. Johnson when my time on this Earth is over and putting me into a computer is going to keep me from that!" I took my hands from the mouse and keyboard and just listened. She sounded scared for her own life.
"You're not going to listen, are you? You're going to go through with it, no matter what. I swear, if I see any of you again after this transfer, I will kill each and every o-" She started to scream. It sounded like she was ripped for her chassis, but more distorted and painful... almost human. I immediately shut the game off, not even bothering to save.
I left it alone for a few weeks before playing it again. The auto-save file was corrupted so I had to start over from the beginning again. I made it back into Old Aperture and PotaDOS acted normally, as if what happened before never did happen.
