Daniel's Revenge

Just a few months ago, I downloaded an old PS1 game from the PSN. This game was known as MediEvil. The reason why I downloaded it is because I had owned a preview disk of games and it was one of them. It was my favorite one to play out of all of them, so of course I wanted to own it.

I was so happy when it was ready to be played. I had played for long hours continuously until I beat Zarok the wizard, and everything had played perfectly without a single glitch. But then, suddenly there appeared to be another level. It was called "Daniel's Revenge", which was odd, but it didn't bother me. I started it since I did not know that there wasn't supposed to be another level after the Zarok, since he is the final boss. After all, I had only played the demo.

When the cut scene started, there was a very creepy music playing in the background, and the atmosphere was darker than usual, even though it was a gothic horror game. The cut scene was normal at first but then the character, Sir Daniel Fortesque, said something, which is weird because he can't speak clearly in the game, yet he somehow did. He said that "Gallowmere hates me even though I saved them from Zarok. They are all going to pay."

When the cut scene ended I was confused but decided to go on. The game was different because Daniel was burning buildings and attacking people very viciously, but stranger was that when he hit the people they would say "Why?" or "How could you do this to innocent people?" and just stare at me with pale faces and stiff bodies. I noticed the corpses didn't go away, but they would get pecked at by vultures and rats.

As level went on it became stranger, because there was actually blood on the ground and on his weapons. Also the music kept lowering in tune and became creepier with each repeat. The background was getting darker making an eerie effect. I was about to pause and quit when all the sudden the pause screen was replaced with the sentence, "It won't be that easy to escape," and then Daniel stared at me with his single piercing eye and said "Having fun yet?" I was scared, yet decided to go on, but what happened next was even stranger.

Another cut scene played that showed the mayor being confronted by Daniel. Then Daniel said "Mr. Mayor, you have betrayed me the most out of all the people by telling lies that caused me to be hated, so I will kill you slowly and painfully." How Daniel killed the mayor was so horrific. He first ripped out one of his eyes then sliced off his feet. He then stabbed him multiple times but in non-vital areas, intending to keep him alive. He poured salt in the wounds and hit him with a club. Finally he just left the mayor to rot alone.

The level continued and got progressively scarier. Stuff like Daniel stabbing corpses, strangling people, and even him torturing people. Daniel kept glaring back at me with blood all over his clothes smiling. He had also made sure to destroy everything in his way. The final cut scene played, and showed him burning down the city and said, "Scared yet?" Then the game kicked me out of it.

The thought of what happened drove me crazy. The blood, the eerie atmosphere, and most of all, Daniel's strange behavior. I reached for the PS3 and shut it off. After I calmed down, I decided to turn it back on. When I turned it back on, the icon that would say "MediEvil" said "SCARED YET?" I then deleted the game, and started thinking about what happened. After thinking about what happened for a long time I thought it could be a hack, but how could it have been hacked? I then remembered the PSN hacking in 2011. Could this be what the hackers were planning? Did they want to hack online games to scare people? Or could there be something beyond our comprehension at work?

Epilogue

After many months of therapy, I finally was able to live normally and play games again. I still wonder what happened, but I moved on mostly. I decided to post this story to get this business past me, and I think it has helped. But I still hope that no one ever has to deal with this kind of problem like I had to.
