Demons of Mystery

My initial thought that day: 'I can't wait to get home.' Welcome to another boring day in the life and times of yours truly. I had gotten up that morning, not ready to face another day at the big bad arena they call a high school, all those laboring classes, those annoying prats, and least of all the horrible meals. There was one thing I was looking forward to, however, and that was doing some light Pokémon trading with a friend of mine.

I got to school, roaming the halls in order to find that said friend, that one person that could lead me to the chance to be the elite, the chance to finally get every single Pokémon in the National Poke-Dex on my Diamond game. Already I had finished all of the old-school games—the best there were in my opinion—but once I start a game, I can't ever put it down until I finish it, especially those of the Pocket Monsters, which was exactly why I trundled around, my black DS tucked cozily into my jeans' pocket.

Continuing to look through the halls, I realized... my friend was nowhere to be found. Frowning, I went back to the main lobby, in order to check to see if his bus had gotten there late, but there was no sign of him anywhere. I went to his locker, hoping to find some hint of the place he may be—too often he had arrived to school early and went to a different class or the like in order to hang out, leaving me a note in his locker. So, I twisted in the combination, pulled the lock, and there, laying on top of his books were pure gold.

His game.

'...What's his game doing here?' I wondered quietly, hesitating slightly to pick it up, before looking underneath it, spying a piece of specially folded notebook paper. Opening the note, I read his message, grinning lightly.

"Hey. Sorry I can't make it to school tomorrow. My mom called me today before school let out and reminded me that I have a doctor's appointment first thing, and since I'm going to be absent anyway for our major classes, I'm not putting forth the effort into coming in period. I'm leaving my game here, since you're the only one with the combination. Trade to your hearts content -- just don't mess with my Misdreavus, alright?"

Chuckling lightly, I took the game, right before the bell rang. Sighing, having had hoped I could get at least a couple of things done before the school day began, I placed the games into my bag, and went to class.

After school was over, I went straight home. Usually, I would hang out in the lobby, talking to friends, discussing Magic tactics or some other gaming stuff, but that day, I hit it out the door, jumped into my car, and drove off.

"I can't wait to get home.'

Once there, I pulled out both our games and linked them through the Union Room. Having done that, I went on ahead and began trading. My Machoke finally got to grow to a Machamp. My Porygons into Porygon 2 and Porygon Z. Just the usual trading things that I needed in order to get a full team. Suddenly, I was aware of his Misdreavus.

The only Pokémon in the entire party that hadn't been traded. Surely, it was discrimination against the Ghost type /not/ to trade her, right? Surely, Mystery deserved to have a new home, if only for a few seconds, in order to show that no one was against her, right? I remembered his warning, telling me not to touch his Misdreavus.. but I ignored it. He'd never know anyway, and he was always so melodramatic, so I thought 'Why not?' It wasn't fair anyway, that all the other Pokémon had a new home for a few seconds, and Misdreavus was all alone, not traded, not changed (although I knew she wouldn't change anyway), so biting back the slight bit of nervousness I felt in my gut... I traded.

The screen that appears, where the pokeball that the Pokémon is in spins and arrives at the new destination was perfect, the Dusk Ball containing the level 13 Misdreavus doing as it should have done... until it reached my cartridge. For some reason, the screen turned completely black, a dark purple haze, like one of those strange clouds you see on a full moon's night, drifting across. I clicked the A button, hoping something would change, and it did. It returned me to the Union Room, but instead of allowing me to re-trade the Pokémon to go back to her original owner, my sprite spinned, taking it back to the Pokémon Center.

Something was strange.. Why would my game not allow me to trade Mystery back? Shrugging the question off, I went on ahead, saved the game, and went downstairs for some dinner. When I returned, I flipped open the game, turned it on, and continued playing.

I went back to the Union Room escalators, attempting to go down them, but instead of allowing me to do so, one of the other sprites blocked the way, the way they do when you haven't received enough badges to be able to open the Union Room. Concerned, I went to my save data, checking to see how many badges my character had. I already knew I had beaten the game, even the Elite Four, and several of the Battle Zones goals even. But to my surprise.. I only had the badges from Oreburgh and Eterna.

HOW COULD THIS BE?!?! All that hard work, training up my Pokémon, being with them, walking with them, all for this purpose, and suddenly, most of my game is wiped out?

I checked my party Pokémon, thinking that maybe my game was just mal-functioning, having to make sure my other Pokémon—Machamp, the Porygons, Golem, and Huntail were there—but to my utter confusion, they were /gone./ The only Pokémon left in my party was Mystery, the level 13 Misdreavus.

Not understanding in the least what was going on, I went over to the PC, opening it up, and hitting A on SOMEONE'S PC.

"Wait a minute..." I thought quietly to myself. "Shouldn't this be /BeBe's/ PC?" Shrugging off the worrying idea that had once again entered my head, I hit A again...

Only to find that, instead of the generally colorful array of wallpapers for the PC, full of Pokémon, there was only a dark black screen, without a single Pokémon in the entire box, each of the headers of the fifteen boxes reading different messages.

"I"

"Warned"

"You"

"Not"

"To"

"Touch"

"Mystery."

"The"

"Consequences"

"Are"

"Yours"

"Now"

"Box Thirteen"

"I'm"

"Sorry" I started laughing, before shaking my head lightly. This was all just one big joke. My friend had always wanted to make a hack—it seems he finally was able to make it, and he gave me the one thing that he knew I'd never be able to turn down—the feelings of having to make sure everyone felt wanted and loved. The problem was, he had messed up my game that I had worked forever on, and that didn't make me that happy, whether for a test run or not. The least he could have done was warned me, so I could have used my Pearl game instead, where I didn't really have much work done, but, alas, he hadn't.

Clicking out of the PC, I went to save my data, cutting off and on the game again to see if, somehow, my game would begin working properly again. It hadn't. And something even /weirder/ had happened. My sprite wasn't where I had left it—in front of the PC in Hearthome City. No... It was now somewhere I hadn't been planning on returning to, since I'd already gotten the Rotom and everything I needed from there.

I was in the Haunted Chateau in the Eterna Forest.

In order to be able to escape the Haunted Chateau, one must have a Pokémon that is able to use cut—a move of which Misdreavus didn't know and couldn't learn—or have a Pokémon that could fly, in order to get to the closest city—once again, something that Mystery couldn't learn. Already, I started hating this madness that had happened. Instead of saving the game, I simply cut off the DS, removed Diamond, placed the cartridge back into the player, and turned it on. Instead of even bringing it to the menu option, the game simply brought me back to the entrance to the Haunted Chateau.

Considering my options, as I always do, I came up with the only two real options available—call the game a lost cause, or go into the Chateau and see what mysteries awaited me. Since I never gave up on a game, I sucked in my breath, already nervous as to what would happen next, before entering within the dark confines of the Chateau.

The place looked the same—the chairs, doors, everything still remaining where it was. There was nothing down here, so I continued straight on to the Dining Hall, which is where I noticed my first experience.

Instead of the silverware and other items on the table flying around, everything was simple, calm, still... Eerily much so, although the music still carried the Chateau's original music, at least until I continued on down the hall. The little girl that is supposed to be in the room on the far right was standing there, red and bloody, the message 'Get Away' written in Chiller-like font.. I went up for closer inspection, but as I continued onward, one of the knives that would normally rest on the table flew straight at my character.

My heart pounding in my chest, I hit the right button and didn't let go until I was safe in the main lobby of the Chateau, making a private note to myself to not go back to that room. When I entered the main lobby, the music changed, seeming to lower in pitch, growing darker and colder. I didn't want to stay in there, so I went up the stairs on the right. I remembered that the ghost girl that was normally seen after one goes into the 'Eye Room' wasn't there, so I decided to go investigate, starting in the rooms to the far left first, then going over to her room.

Strangely, the rooms were the same, except that each room that I went into, going from left to right, steadily grew darker and redder, seeming to become some sort of ghostly Hell. Furthermore, I never ran into a single Pokémon. Not one.

Curious as to why that was, I continued running around in circles in each of the rooms, even going into the Eye Room to try to find the Gastly that always hid behind the photo. Finding not another Pokémon, I shivered, cutting off the game again. Turning it back on, and landing right back in the middle of the Eye Room, although I knew I hadn't saved the game since Hearthome, I went on ahead and went to view my character's information. The Sprite and all was the same, which I honestly hadn't expected—I had read far too many Creepypastas about the characters changing—but what did surprise me was the fact that the original name, Ixen (Fire in Draconic, for those that doesn't know), had been replaced with the word "Cursed."

A wave of cool air seeming to wash over me, I quickly closed out of the information, and went on in into the final room. Where normally there was a bed, there was nothing, save a tombstone. Going over to the tombstone, the song started playing that creepy song from Lavender Town... Lavender Town? Why would a Generation 1-3 sound card be involved with a Generation 4 game? Shrugging the thought on out of my head again, curiosity getting the best of me, I walked up to the tombstone. It was empty.

And I wanted it to freaking stay that way too.

Racing out of the room I fled down the stairs, down the hallway, to the door of the Chateau. The door was /locked/ I was stuck. I couldn't get out. My heart pounding in my chest, I went back to the stairs—only to find they had disappeared. How could they have just disappeared like that?!

I was stuck. There was nowhere to go... except the Dining Room.. The dreaded Dining Room of which there would probably be no turning back.

'If you want your game back, you're going to have to work this hack to the end,' I admonished myself. 'Suck it up and get going.'

Taking a deep breath, I forced my sprite, the newly named 'Cursed' to go into the Dining Hall. I entered, and the room was pitch black, but onwards, where I saw the girl earlier, there was a large shadow.

"May as well go check it out," I thought, pushing my sprite on towards the inky area.

Floating there, waiting on me, was a Misdreavus...

Mystery.

The screen turned black.

A few moments later, the game moved around without me, sort of like from a third person's point of view.

My Sprite was where the little girl's was earlier in the engagement of the scene. Exiting from the Dining Hall, the game went up to the room on the furthest right, where the tombstone was. Written there was the epitaph:

Cursed
5-13-11—5-13-11

The game ended, going black, the DS itself cutting off. I tried turning back on the game, but Diamond wouldn't work any longer. Placing my Pearl game inside, I found it worked fine—just not the precious Pokémon game I had worked on for so long.

What worried me then was the fact that I had /traded/ Mystery into my Diamond game. There was no way to get her back! Opening up my friend's game, I went to his Pokémon Party...

Inside the party was Mystery the Misdreavus... The Sixth Pokémon, Level 66.
