Diablo 2 "Curse"

It was a typical Saturday. I got up, ate some cereal, and went to play one of my favorite games, Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction. Now, I do have my own account for Battle.Net, but I prefer to play singleplayer. Today, though, something told me to avoid singleplayer. So, I did. However, my internet went down just as I hovered my mouse over the button to connect to Battle.Net. I figured maybe it was just horrible timing, and shook it off. Now I wish I didn't. I went to singleplayer, and noticed the druid I'd spent 3 months playing on was gone! I thought my brother was playing a prank and about to yell at him until I noticed the paladin I made when I first got this game, Knight, was now replaced with a level 66 paladin named "Curse". I was a little unnerved, and thought maybe my brother got some type of hack and did something to my game. Out of curiosity, I played on this character. Biggest mistake in gaming of my life.

It was the beginning of the game, no quests, nothing amazing except for the skill Sacrifice, the original sword and buckler, and then a quilted armour, 2 rings, an amulet, leather boots, gloves, a cap, and a sash. All very basic items. I thought maybe they had something cool about them, and so I checked them out. I looked at the sword first, since I always like having god-like weapons. What was strange was this sword had orange text, and was titled "Demon Short Sword" and had only 2 things special about it. It was indestructible, and it had a 66% chance to Re-Animate slain monsters as "Burning Dead". I thought this was cool until I remember the level of Curse being 66. Looks like my brother wanted some sort of satanic character, huh?

I moved on to the buckler, thinking maybe this would be better. It was just as creepy. It was known as "Corruption Buckler" and had the same Indestructible powers as the sword, however it had "-66 Monster Defense per Hit" and "+66% Fire Absorb". This was becoming creepy. How would this all become the number 66 and the only absorb from this shield is fire? I was about ready to just quit, but the esc button refused to work. My keyboard was a piece of shit, and I was ready to throw it out the window. Not now, later, of course.

I went to the quilted armor, and it just stayed at the same level of "What the hell am I still doing here?" The name of this joyful little piece of hell was "Shadow Quilted Armor". Of course, indestructible. Also, it seemed to live up to its name. It had -4 to Light Radius on it, so my light radius was dimmed. I thought I could just get another quilted armor, since I hate my light radius going down in this game, and went to take it off, but then my mouse stopped responding. This was now that I noticed a message fade away in the chat log. I thought "That's weird. I haven't typed anything yet." Little side note, I like to type random messages in singleplayer when I get bored. Anyways, I went to the chat log, and saw one word typed from my character: "Don't." This is when I got scared, and by scared, I mean ready-to-run scared. I exited the chat log, and went back to the inventory, and went on the cap.

Before I say the name, let me let you go out on a limb. Yeah. It's indestructible. Pretty obvious at this point. Anyways, the name of the cap was "Skull Cap". Sure. Didn't see that coming. Excuse me for all the periods in this paragraph, by the way. So, this piece of armor had +66% chance of Crushing Blow, which I assumed would be linked to head trauma, hence the name "Skull Cap". Yup. I'm getting too into this. This is why I don't trust things that changed themselves anymore.

Okay, before I continue, I HAVE read Creepypastas and I do know not to play with games that have been altered from when I last left them, or games that act strange. I know this. However, you wouldn't know how I felt unless you were in this type of situation.

Okay, back to the "Curse" inventory. I moved on to the amulet, and it's name for some reason shocked me. It was named "Entropy noose Amulet". Incase you don't know and think it's a Latin word, it's not. Entropy simply means chaos, or no order. It dropped my light radius by -4, which I now know due to exploring Hero Editor is the absolute lowest you can go, and it reduced vendor prices by... 66. Of course. Why would it use any other number?

Before I continued on to the rings, I remembered there was a second slot of weapons and shields! I was hoping for something better, like a holy sword and shield, but I was wrong. It was exact duplicates of the first page. That straight down killed my hopes of this game becoming any better.

So, in a dreadful way, I continued to the rings, and before I could read what they were and what they were named, I noticed another message fade away. I opened the chat log, and saw "Don't be like that. Continue inspecting what you'll use for the rest of your life in this game, and let's go." It was like whatever the hell was in this game knew what I was feeling. So, I listenned to it and decided to just suck it up and go on so I can finally put this gear to use. The left ring was known as "Plague Ring" and the right ring known as "Blood Ring". Plague Ring had -4 Light Radius, like whoever this guy was loved the damn dark, and +666 Maximum Poison Damage. Yeah, I was expecting that. The Blood Ring had the same light depletion, and +66% chance of Open Wounds, which explains the name.

Despite the creepy shit so far, I moved on to the gloves. These were known as "Stone Gloves" and of course were indestructible, since we're back to durability armor. The add-on to these gloves were Knock-Back, and when I looked at it through Hero Editor, it was +66. Now, before people ask, I looked through everything on here through Hero Editor after discovering it was installed on my computer, something my brother used for his characters that I didn't know about (sneaky bastard), and I had kept a back-up save of Curse before entering the game. I guess I should've mentioned that. You see, before I went to singleplayer, I exitted, went into the Diablo II file, found the save of Curse, and copied it to another folder on my desktop as a backup incase I wanted to check it out later. Back to the story now.

I moved to the boots. These were named "Chaos Leather Boots" and I'm not even going to say it. The attribute unique to this was that it prevented monster heal, and through Hero Editor noticed it was by the infamous +66. I was becoming more bored then scared at this point, and that's when the creepy motherfucker behind all this noticed and decided to shock fear through me to keep me scared by shooting a loud screeching noise into my headphones, almost causing me to fall over. It only lasted a second, but dear God it was enough to put me back into the terrified state I was in when I realized this wasn't a prank.

Last piece of armor, and we can finally play. The sash. It was named "Pain Sash" for some reason, and looking at the special attribute, I knew why. It had a +66% chance of Deadly Strike, which I could imagine would cause a lot of pain.

Finally. I was done. I could now play the damned game! I decided to see if there was anything in the chest, and finally noticed something weird. There was exactly 666,666 gold in the chest, and I had 666 gold on me. I was really beginning to hate the whole demonic number shit, and this time I caught a message before it disappeared. My character told me to check my stats. Of course, everything was "666", from my strength to my health. Well, that's not shocking. So, I went out to the Blood. Yes. That's it. It just said "Blood". I then noticed somehow a Bone Wall was cast, and prevented me from entering the Rogue Encampment again. I waited for 5 minutes, attacked for about 3, and tried unsummoning for 1, and the bone wall just stayed there, not letting me go back. I was now a little pissed off. So, I continued into the wilderness, which had way too many trees and a very puzzle-like path. I then noticed swarms of messages, saying "Curse has joined the game. Diablo's minions grow stronger!" as if this was multiplayer. I was scared again, and when it finished, Curse said "Diablo's minions have grown stronger 66 times." I just pressed enter and typed "Yup. When did you ever do that before?" Shockingly, he replied "Ha. Good point." I was a little relieved he didn't lash out or anything.

What happened next killed my relief instantly. Anderial, the Act I boss, was standing on the other side of a river. I had NO way to attack her, and she kept shooting poison at me, dropping my health instantly. I kept using the full health pots in my sash until I ran out and tried to run for it. Of course, Bone Wall straight up said no. I ended up with the death screen, and respawned. This time, I was in Lut Gholein, and it said "Lut" like it said "Blood" in Act I. Strange. But, compared to the earlier occurrences, this didn't matter. I walked through the town and noticed a lack of people, and then when I tried to exit via the Sewer entrance near Meshif, a loud screech went off again, scaring me worse than last time, and I somehow died in the town! I respawned, and noticed where each NPC was laid a corpse of Anderial. I was a little weirded out, but relieved that asshole died after killing me so brutally. I went to the other entrance in the Sewer, and I'll be damned. It worked. I entered "Sew" which was even worse, since the first word wasn't even finished.

After exploring Sew for a bit, I hit a few dead ends and came across a random waypoint, and when I clicked it, I died again. Figures. Respawning, I ended up in the Act III town, which I forgot the name of. The name Curse made for this town was "Home". I thought this might be where Curse was going for this whole time. I took one step, and I MEAN ONE STEP, when out of nowhere Mephisto popped up on screen, and since I was in town couldn't attack. Mephisto beat the living hell out of me in 3 seconds, and I ended up with a screen that had one word "FAILURE". I respawned in Act IV town, which is known as "Punishment" now. I typed in the chatbox "What the hell? I couldn't attck!" He replied "You had Sacrifice." I typed "That would deplete my health!" and he came back with something that I now use as a motto in games when using moves that hurt your health, like Sacrifice does.. "So does the enemy."

I gave up on trying to reason with Curse, and continued down the stairs that I spawned at in Punishment, and when I got to what would be considered the first part of wilderness in Act IV, I noticed the game cut to black and came to the screen where Deckard Cain says "You're new name is" or whatever. Instead, it was zalgofied and had four words I still have nightmares of to this day. "Your fate is sealed."

After reading those four words, the game cut off, and refused to open. I deleted the in-game file of Curse, where it worked afterwords with my previous save files back, and inspected the backup I made. I will refuse to upload the backup of Curse here, and I refuse to private-message it to anybody. It's too risky for anybody else to go through this. Just trust me.

UPDATE
Date: July 11, 2012

Well, today I hopped back onto Diablo 2, and was about to try out the Sorc class, when I thought about checking the back-up save I made of Curse. I fought myself for a few minutes, and eventually curiosity won and I pasted the back-up into the save files in the game. I went to Singleplayer, and my characters were still there, now Curse was there due to me adding the save. I clicked on him, and entered the game. It took about 3 seconds and I was in. I waited for something like a screech, or death screen. But, I was in Act I, Rogue Encampment, and everything acted normal. I got the Den of Evil quest, I was able to take my armour off, and so on. The wilderness was normal, no Anderial across a river, no self-talking character, nothing. The game was completely normal. Curse was just a one-time thing, I guess. Before I get my hopes up, I'll play for a while, maybe aim to kill Anderial. If I can get into Act II, and everything stays normal, I might upload a download link to the back-up file of Curse.

I've just now got to the Inner waypoint, and I've decided to stop for the night. Not a single strange thing has happened yet. However, my hopes aren't up yet. I'm still waiting for something to go wrong or something to scare me halfway to death. Maybe I can find something like that tomorrow.

UPDATE

No. No no. No. This isn't right. I'll say more after I gain my sanity.

UPDATE
Date: July 13, 2012 - 12:52 A.M.

Okay, what happened was when I got to Catacombs Level 4, it was just the first room. No door. Anderial was on the other side, and there was the same river she killed me at. I tried to run, but each time I went through the stairwell back to Level 3, it sent me back here. I was trapped and of course died. The game quit, and refuses to launch for the night. I had a notepad on my desktop titled "READ.txt" with one sentence on it: "Game over for tonight, come back tomorrow." Whatever this Curse guy is thinks this is some sort of sick game...

UPDATE
Date: July 14, 2012 - 12:53 A.M.

I got back on, after resisting for half an hour, Curse's character. I noticed he was a Patriarch now, and hoped maybe this meant I would be done soon with this hell. Not even close. I clicked on him, and the Difficulty selection screen came up, which normally allowed Normal, Nightmare, and Hell when a Patriarch or Matriarch. However, only the Hell difficulty was available, and I went in because I knew by now this was no glitch and I had no other choice. My computer decided to go on a coffee break, because for about 5 minutes NOTHING was responding. My keyboard, mouse, nothing did anything. I was about ready to reboot it, via the power button, but right when I reached for it, everything went to normal, I guess you could say. I was back at the title screen, and went into singleplayer. Same selection, and when I clicked on Curse, Nightmare was the only available one, and so I entered. I was in Harragoth, the Act V town, which I was expecting due to him being a Patriarch. I wandered around, and none of the NPC's where were they should be. Instead, they were all huddled around a dead paladin, which I assumed was Curse. I tried talking to them, and they would say short things. Things along the lines of "It had to be done." or "We didn't want this to happen." I just guessed that Curse used to live here, lost his mind, and they killed him. However, the earth had shook like if you summoned Diablo in Act IV, and heard the gate-opening sound when you go to leave Harragoth via the entrance gate. I walked over to that point, curious like my dumbass usually is, and standing there was Baal, the last boss in the game. He just walked over to the huddled NPC's, and a message box came up, which was empty until a sentence scrolled up on it saying "He's mine now..." The screen flashed, and my corpse in the NPC circle was gone, and Baal walked away. During this whole time I couldn't move, and right when Baal left and the gate shut, I could move. I went to the gate and tried to go after him, but to no avail. I went to the NPC circle, and they all said one thing. "I feel his prescence... As if he's just a wandering spirit now..." This was when I realized that I've been playing as a ghost of Curse this entire session. A red portal opened up in the middle of the circle, and they all walked into it, me following shortly after. I was the only one there, and it looked like the Arcane Sancturary, but just a small platform with pillars on all sides, making some sort of wall. The portal shut, trapping me here. Another text box appeared that side "Your fate has been sealed..." and the game shut out. Upon returning, Curse was gone and replaced by a dead Hardcore character named "Gone". I actually felt a little sad now... But, I deleted Gone, since he was unplayable, and that's the last I've seen Curse. I'm a little too scared to play the Back-up again, but I might, since it's the weekend now and I can stay up all I want. It's been an hour since the whole Curse-to-Gone situation, but nothing's happened yet. I'll check back in later. Maybe about 2 AM or so.

UPDATE
Date: Wednesday, July 18, 8:56 AM

Well, my internet was down for a while as you can tell, but I have had absolutely no sign of Curse ever since the whole "Gone" situation. I'm assuming this is the end of it all, but I don't have any hope left ever since he just came back out of nowhere. I'll keep updating if anything happens.

UPDATE
Date: Thursday, July 19, 9:47 PM

Every time I open up D2 now, there's always a dead Hardcore level 66 character named "Gone." I can delete it, sure, but if I exit out of the game and re-launch it, he's back. I'm assuming something's still in my game. Again, I'll update if something major happens.

UPDATE
Date: Thursday, July 19, 9:52 PM

Wow. I just entered a game with "Gone". That's not possible, since he's a DEAD HARDCORE character. Rules in Diablo 2 are, if a Hardcore character dies, you are unable to enter the game. The character is still there, but unplayable. Anyways, back to what happened. I entered the game and was back in that same platform, but the red portal was back. I hit esc, and it actually worked! I managed to "Save and Exit" the game without anything going wrong. I would go back in so I can update what happens, but it's almost 10 PM and I don't feel like dealing with Curse tonight. I'll probably mess with him tomorrow.

UPDATE
Date: Friday, July 20, 10:02 AM

Well, I re-entered the game of "Gone", and went inside the portal. It teleported me back to the area, with the message "You have entered your sealed fate." I tried to open a Town Portal, noticing 4 full tomes of 'em in my inventory, and each time I did that, a message came from Curse that said "That won't do you any good." I've been playing the Legend of Zelda series lately, and I noticed this came from Majora's Mask. I typed in "What? Did you watch me play other games too?" No reply for about 2 minutes until he came back with "You've finally figured it out." So, I just said "Yeah, looks like you're harmless now, huh? I know what you can do now. All I have to do is get a new computer and destroy this one, and you're gone." He said "I'm harmless? Think again." My computer blue screen'd after I read that, and I just left it off. Obviously, it worked later, explaining how I'm updating this. From then, which was about 9:04 AM that happened, to now which is 10:07 AM while I'm updating this, I've been hearing loud bangs, whispers that are low enough that I can't hear what they are saying, but loud enough I know they're real, and seeing apparitions of the original Curse paladin. I'm just ignoring all of it, hoping this is just my mind over-reacting... I'll update if anything else happens, as usual.

UPDATE
Date: Friday, July 20, 11:54 PM

This is either going to be my second-to-last or my last update. My friend or somebody else might update it, but it won't be me unless I notify it is me. The bangs, whispers, and apparitions have been getting worse and worse ever since this morning when it all started. Now when I open my computer and log-in, my desktop is flooded with pictures of Gone titled "Fate.png" and text documents known as "Curse.txt" which all say "Your fate has been sealed." I fear something bad might happen, and from reading Creepypasta's, I'm sure of it. It seems Curse is some sort of demonic spirit who decided to haunt my game, and went off when I finally figured out his game. Or, I thought I did. Since this is more than likely my last update, I'll just tell you all this real quick: Never trust something that's been changed. If it's been changed, avoid it at ALL costs. Goodbye, or see you in the last update if I do. Depends whether I'm alive or not.

Hello. This is an update, not by the guy who's been normally updating as you can tell since I don't have the normal update thing going, since I don't know how to do that. My name is Christopher Autry, and I'm a close friend of the person who's been making these updates. We've known each other for about 4 years, and this won't be 5 years. I was hanging over yesterday on Friday, when he ran to me, handed me a note, and locked himself in his room. The note said:

If I do not come out alive tomorrow, update this site with whatever you can: http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Diablo_2_"Curse"?action=edit

Read it first so you know what's been going on. Also, leave me unidentified.

After I read the note, I thought he was pranking me. I went to the site, which is where I'm typing, and after getting to his last update saw what's been going on with him, and I went to go get him out of his room, but at that moment his scream echo'd through the house, followed by a loud slashing sound. Because I was the closest one to the door, I busted it open by kicking it, and he was dead on the floor. There was a large slash in his chest that looked like it was from a sword, and it was fresh since blood was still pouring out of it. I got out my cellphone and tried to call 911, but the signal was gone. I had no Wi-Fi or 3G or anything. Then, at that moment, my phone died and the power went out of the house. I looked back where my friend was, and his body, blood, everything was gone. I noticed his computer was open and unlocked, which he always keeps it locked because of his trust issues. I went to it, and his whole desktop was flooded with the pictures and text documents mentioned in one of his earlier updates. His background was changed from his usual Diablo 2 Background of the Character Select screen with them all in their selected state to an image of an in-game screenshot of a paladin with noob gear on. This is when I realized that there was blood all over the field, and a dead druid corpse infront of the paladin. I knew what was going on here. "Curse", which I assumed was the paladin, had killed my friend and trapped his corpse in the game as the druid he'd been working on. Obviously the power is back on, but we can't call the police about this since there's no evidence a death happened. They won't do anything about disappearances, so we're stuck with this on our own. This shall be the last update of this "creepypasta."
