Doctor Ludlow

He watched as Ludlow slipped on the mask, letting the noose dangle about him. A perverse necktie, complete with that horrific cowl. The sound of a gulp escaped him, as the good doctor sat across the table.

"Have you said your prayers?" The oddly controlled voice was unsettling in all regards, and accompanied by those unnaturally violet eyes. One could almost believe he was correct in his God complex.

His own voice was unusually weak, "I'm agnostic."

"A shame really. God has a plan for us all. Even the meek."

He'd never heard Dr. Ludlow speak of religion. "Aren't you God?" He asked, regaining enough courage to mock.

The eyes that peered behind the mask looked down for a moment, and darted back to match his own just as quick. He could swear there was a smile forming beneath that patchwork cloth.

"You look tired. Haven't you been sleeping well?" A subtle jab at his current situation.

He was tired. And the 'treatments' that occurred every night had begun to take their toll days ago.

"Why are you here? I've not seen you more than once since we arrived"

"I've been busy." There was certainly a smile now. "And I thought your case deserved a more personal touch. You know how very understaffed we are at this time."

A knot was forming in his stomach, as his apprehension rose. He'd seen The Doctor on television before the incident. Back when everyone thought he was fighting for the other side. Since then he'd heard stories of his true nature.

"Such unsettling stories they tell of me." A haunting lullaby, it seemed to echo through the white room. More than a shiver rose through his spine. Was it true then? He could see into peoples minds?

"I don't place stock in rumors." He watched the eyes while he spoke. Those red eyes, running across his face. No then. He was just clever enough to know the effect he had on people.

Given the state of things, and his reputation... Anyone would be thinking of the stories.

"There is a grain of truth in every lie, without exception. Often times more." The Doctor rose from his chair, as he let his words roll out like the turn of a page.

"Dr. Ludlow, I'm not one of those children you used. You can't scare me with this pathetic act!" He regretted his words the moment they escaped his lips.

Absolute silence followed for only a second. The anger behind the mask, at the mention of his name. Ludlow approached him slowly.
