Don't Blink

This happened to my great grandfather's father 94 years ago. He was a Sergeant in the World War I. He and his squad were sent undercover in a secret German gas production facility located near Belgium. Intelligence says the gas is more dangerous than Mustard gas, Chlorine gas, and Phosgene gas combined. They were given a special type of gas mask called Prototype 04. The gas can only affect others by inhalation and it would also affect the eyes.

They would be sent by Jeep, breach in at the side door, clear any signs of resistance, and extract the hazardous materials by boat. It was standard routine for them. However, it didn't go as planned. One of his squadmates were spotted and they released the gas. His squad mate, Corporal Orwell, got shot in the head. Fortunately, he survived with no serious injuries, but his gas mask broke and he was exposed. My great-grandfather's father (Sgt. York) was his closest and most trusted friend. He promised him years ago when they met he would not die. He failed him. He cried. He hoped this mission will not get any worse.

Orwell died in under 60 seconds. Once the facility was cleared, they went on to the beach where their boat was located. Everything went fine, but York was confused as to why the hell his squadmates would disappear and then a while later they would appear again. He ignored it and went back to base. The Commander was very proud of their work, and he gave them a round of beer during their free time. York went to sleep and he promised he would celebrate with them tomorrow. York thought a shadow passed through him during his sleep.

"Dude, I just thought a shadow passed through me."

"Really? Maybe it's just a Jeep outside just passed by our bunk."

"No! I really saw it! No light was outs-... What the fuck, Henry, there's a fucking guy in the corner!"

"What the hell are you doing?! Shooting a gun is just for defense or attack outside of the base! I don't fucking see a guy in the corner!"

The shadows were moving closer to him. He had to defend himself. He shot a shadow, but it doesn't seem to affect it. The shadows were just at their closest when York slipped unconscious.

The next day, the commander was very mad at him.

"You fucking alerted the entire base! I will not be accepting any of this ever again!"

When York asked Henry (his fellow bunk mate) what happened, he said, "You shot the window, and alarms were blaring just 30 seconds later. Jeeps started rolling outside and a bunch of soldiers broke through our bunker. They asked what the hell is going on, and I told him that you shot the window and you fell unconscious."

"What the fuck mate, I-... HOLY FUCKING SHIT! Why did everyone disappear in just- OH. MY. GOD. Why is the world blacking?"

He felt something grab his leg.

"HELP! MY GOD!"

He quickly drew out his handgun. Something was dragging him. 10 seconds later he was in mid-air. He fell unconscious for the second time as his head hit the wall really hard. A week later, he woke up in a special hospital with Henry beside him.

"Why is this happening to me?"

His vision blurred and when he scratched his eyes and blinked a few times, he blacked out. He thought he was unconscious again... well he is. Forever.

Researchers say the effect was from the gas. Traces are unknown.

The last thing he saw was a pair of eyes with an evil smile staring at him. It continues to lurk through my families generations, and it may lurk yours.
