Don't Go to the Harbor at Night

There is a harbor not far from where I live that no one goes to at night - you'd be wise to do the same if you ever visited the area. I made the mistake of once going against the norm and dared to venture down to the harbor at night, to this day I count myself lucky to be alive.

You see it was late one night when I decided to go to the harbor, like a kid who was on a dare - wanting to see what all the fuss was about: after all, ever since I was young, I was told "Don't go to the harbor at night," and every time I'd ask why I'd get a reply of "Doesn't matter - just listen."

Of course this only sparked my curiosity further and I had finally had enough, entering the harbor I was a little scared due to how dark it was - the sound of the ocean beating against the old pier as I made my way over to the structure.

The pier was almost as old as the harbor itself and the wood creaked as I cautiously made my way to the edge, wanting to brave the experience despite the obvious dangers - the cold sea air blowing against me as I finally made it to the edge and stared out at the black abyss.

Then without warning a long, slimy tendril shot out from under the pier and wrapped around my leg - tugging me straight into the icy water and pulling me under.

The shock of the cold filled with salty water entering my lungs sent a rush of fear through my body as I kicked out, the tendril removing itself as I rose to the surface and gasped for air: coughing and spluttering as I made my way back to the pier.

I barely touched the edge of the pier before a figure rose from the water behind me, most of it hidden by the waves but a large deformed head with bulging eyes and glistening fangs was barely visible along with a horrible skeltal body - several tendrils flailed and splashed where human arms would normally be.

The creature snapped its jaws repeatedly as it made another grab at me with those tendrils but I managed to evade its grasp long enough to scramble back onto the pier and ran faster than I had ever ran before: my heart almost exploding in my chest as I ignored the pain from my aching legs.

I ran straight to the end of the pier and a good distance up the path before finally turning around to check on where the creature was - it was a decision I regret to this day as I still have nightmares of what I saw.

The creature dragged itself out of the water, having no legs to speak off - just a swollen, round mass - sliding across the pier with those tendril-like arms as it snapped its jaws wildly: the thing looking awkward on land but clearly not willing to give up on its prey.

I didn't wait long, I fled from the area and didn't stop until I had reached home - my parents say I was shaking uncontrollably and unable to speak, my clothes still soaking wet and my hair standing on end.

So, take it from me - when someone tells you "Don't go to the harbor at night" - you'd better listen...
