Don't Play with Death

I know the fandom that comes from the Persona series well. I also know of consequences and the true power of actions. It all started when my friend Alex recommended the game Persona 3 to me. I did my research and decided to buy the game and give it a try, since the only real flaw with the game was that the Personas were summoned by using a handgun like device called an Evoker.

I get the game and the only odd thing I see is that the Pentagram on the cover is upside down. Normally I'd be freaked out because an inverse Pentagram usually is found in the rituals of Satanists, but I ignore it and start playing it on my PS2. Nothing seems to be out of place, until I get to the part when the main character and Yukari are running away from the Magician Shadow.

The scene begins to act out as normal, and then the main character grabs Yukari's Evoker and pulls the trigger. Instead of getting the scene of Orpheus awakening and then transforming into Thanatos, it just shows the MC getting his head blown to pieces. It then proceeds to show Yukari getting killed and a procession being held for the two of them. At that moment, I turn off the game with the intent of never putting it in again.

About a week later, Alex calls me to ask how I liked the game. The conversation went as follows:

"Hey, so how're you enjoying Persona 3?"

"Actually, I think I got a hacked version or something. It didn't show anything that it was supposed to."

"You sure?"

"I saw the protagonist blow his brains out in the first two hours. You tell me."

"All right. I want to see it for myself."

I showed him the game and booted it back up, but this time it was a little different. This time, it showed the protagonist pull out a sword during his first real time in the Dark Hour and stab himself repeatedly. Of course it freaked the both of us out entirely. But it wasn't over...not by a long shot.

The next scene showed the MC lying in a graveyard with both of his eyes gouged out, his tongue severed, and a bullet hole between his eye...sockets. We were about to turn off the TV when the scene changed It then showed Nyx killing the people of the world by dissolving them and leaving them in a puddle of their own blood. An image that was dark even for this version of the game.

This really got us on edge, but there were a few surprises left. It then showed Thanatos as he destroyed everything in an explosion that resembled a nuclear blast. At last it ended with a message being carved across the screen: "This is what happens when you play with Death."

I had to get a new TV after the fact because the message was actually burned into the screen. It took Alex and me about a year to recover, but we eventually were able to go about our lives normally. But neither of us will forget what happened for the rest of our lives. I for one see those images every time I close my eyes, as though the television wasn't just the one that had them burned into it.
