Donkey Kong Country: Poison Pond Secret

What I am about to tell you all is not a story designed to scare people like many of the other ones on here are. It is simply the truth. In the span of everyone's lifetime, there are some things that cannot be explained and are shrugged off as if they are fictional stories to scare little kids. However, what happened to me one evening in the summer of 2001 I will never forget the rest of my life. I lived through an event that to this day no one will ever believe.

The Start of What Seemed To Be A Good Day

My story takes me back to the summer of 2001. My grandfather had just passed away and we (me and my brother) became good friends with the boys down the street. We hung out pretty much every day that summer with them and my cousin from the corner of the street. Back then, the Nintendo 64 was the thing (the PS2 had launched but not many people at the time had them). We would play games like Pokémon Stadium, Donkey Kong 64, and Mario 64 like they were going out of style. After countless all nighters, we found ourselves looking through the closet to play old games! Looking through it, we came across my old Super Nintendo. My cousin was ecstatic to see we had Donkey Kong Country on it and even more hyped that we had never beaten it (he would get a kick out of beating games and hearing us cheer him on). So after a few minutes of searching for the right wires to hook it up, we fired up the old SNES for the first time in years. It still played as good as the first time we cut it on. After a few hours of playing it and a load of lives lost (gives us some slack; we were kids), my cousin finally got up to the stage that is named "Poison Pond". This is where my story truly begins.

Poison Pond's Secret

Poison Pond starts off like any water level. You are placed under water to get to the end of the stage, only in this level the water is green instead of blue and a foggy haze is in the atmosphere. My cousin played the level like any other, going through it at a slow but steady pace. He came to a spot not far from the beginning right after a squid came swimming but right before two tires saws were placed. He was leaning against the bottom of the stage when he fell through. Anyone who has played Donkey Kong Country knows this to be a very common way water stages hid secret items and extra lives. However, when my cousin went down, everyone in the room was puzzled to see an item in the game we weren't familiar with in the DKC series. It was a big silver key. When my cousin touched it, nothing happened and the sound effect for getting it was the same as that of getting a normal banana. So he swam back up and we immediately noticed something strange. The tire saws were stuck in place instead of moving.

Further playing of the stage, we noticed all enemies remained stuck in one spot, but weren't moving. Something else that was weird is the more closer to the end of the stage my cousin got, the more white the background got. Approaching the end of the stage, we were all shocked to see the normal Exit sign had a X marked on it. Trying to walk off the screen which normally ends a level just resulted as if we reached a dead end. So my cousin swam back the way he did, making his way back to the first part. Ironically, the level's color was normal green when he arrived at the point where the secret path was, but was rapidly turning blurry red the closer he got to the beginning of the stage. At the very beginning, we were all given goosebumps seeing what looked as if a gold treasure chest. Touching it, the screen faded out. There was no music but it showed the cast's names like it would the ending, only the screen was black and the words were in a pink bubble gum like font. What was next gave me nightmares for years to come.

The screen was black for a couple seconds and my cousin and brother and I were all looking at each other confused. Thinking the game had froze, we were about to reset the game when a horrid screeching noise that maxed out my TV's volume came on and showed an image of a man I have never seen before that looked like he was probably in his 50's and had a beard. Under him said the words "WANTED". Then in the background slow funeral music played on an organ was playing. We unplugged the system and looked at each other all scared to death.

To this day, the events that happened that evening still give me goosebumps. No one will ever believe our story, because upon trying it again, the secret room wasn't there. It's almost as if the game got a mind of it's own. I will never know how or why, but what I speak is the truth. You might not believe in these types of things, but as for me and everyone who witnessed it, we believe.
