Double Crossed

This is the only place I feel comfortable posting my story. I feel that if it appeared anywhere else, people might laugh at me. This is the only place I feel someone knows what I am talking about.

The day everything first started seemed normal at first. I was spending the day with my family, when my grandmother asked me to go to the shops to buy her some milk. Having been quit a pain as a child, I did my best, as I grew older, to not make her upset in any way.

So I walked off to the shops, it was only a short walk, barely 20 minutes. The shop was run by a middle aged asian couple and along with basic staples and candy, they sold rip off computer games and the like. I had been playing the Sims 2 for a while and was getting bored of it, so decided I would see what they had. There were games like "Zalda" A rip off of what looked like one of the "Zelda" games, and "Pocket Monsters 3D" which I had downloaded off the internet before and found was just a lame 3d mesh rendering of "Pokemon Blue". But then I saw one particular game that caught my eye. The game case was similar to the original "Fable" for pc and the crystal case it was in looked like it came from the 80's. The paper was kind of yellowed and torn. But it said that it needed to be put in the dvd section of the computer so I figured it was just effects. The whole thing was in Japanese I think. Thinkin

g it would be similar to the Fable games, which I was a huge fan of, I grabbed it then got the milk for my grandmother. When I got to the counter, I asked if the game would have an english option. The store owner just looked at me and told me that the game would know.

I got the game and the milk and walked back to my grandmothers. I didnt think too much about what the store owner said. I had been there a few times and the man's english wasnt the best. I just assumed that he meant when I installed it, it come up with a language selection or something.

When I got home, I had almost forgotten about the game altogether. But as I went to go on my laptop, I figured I may as well instal it and check it out. I run windows 7, and so usually a tonne of things happen before you even consider installing anything. But instead of all that, the screen went to full screen mode and the title screen popped up. And as the man in the store said, the game knew I wanted and English option.

The title was named "Double Crossed", and under the title in an oldfashioned font were three options.

"Play"

"Load" (Greyed out as I had no save files to load)

"Leave with your sanity"

Naturally I just thought the last option was a joke. A way to creep you out slightly before the game began. I clicked "Play".

It took me to an opening clip, you were looking at the world through your characters eyes. You were in a village, and there was distruction everywhere. An old style army was raiding the village and piercing screams were heard. In front of me was a bleeding woman, her body beaten and bruised. My character leant down and helped her up and it went from a scene clip to a spoken clip.

The woman thanks you for helping her up, and the little avatar of her picture looked familiar. I ignored it and decided it must be purely coincidence. The game switches to gameplay mode and the woman I had helped starts to walk away. There is an arrow pointing down over her head so I assumed that meant I should follow her.

We walked through the town and the violence slowly grows worse and more realistic. The woman stops and I'm indicated to talk to her again. So I click on her and more dialogue comes up. Her little avatar again seems more realistic, and when I look at it, I realize it looks like my mother. The woman says that an enemy village was attacking and that I need to talk to the sargent inside the building we were outside of. So I go inside and speak two who I assume was the sargent. When the sargents picture comes up next to the dialogue I barely pay attention to what is said. Even though in the game the general is clearly a man, its avatar was that of my deceased friend Tanya. The sargent slaps me in the game and says "Pay attention Linda." I was shaken, how did the game know:

  1. My Name
  2. What my friends and family looked like

I figured that the game got my information and photos from my computer. Then a sudden realization hit me. I had no pictures of Tanya on my computer. I quickly shut the game down. I had been holding my breath, and only realized when I turned the game off. I quickly took the game out of my computer and threw it away. I had a bad feeling about the game, so I quickly threw it out.

I went to bed that night shaken, but come morning, had basically forgoten about it again. But when I got on my computer next, on my desktop was a icon that wasnt there before, and the text describing the icon was in Japanese.

I opened it and wenr straight to the title screen of "Double Crossed". The menu options however where a little different.

"Play"

"Load" (This time in blood red)

"There is no escape for the hopeless"

Here is the sceen shot I took of the game on my desktop...

I was shaken by this. I know that the game hadn't installed, yet I was still able to access it. I clicked on "Play", and a message came up. "You can't do that Lynda!"

I shuddered, and went to click the exit option. Another message popped up. "We wont let you go Lynda come play! HEE HEE"

I was shaking by this point, and even recalling it now, sends shivers through me. I pressed "Ctl"+"Alt"+"Del" in the hopes of getting out of the game, but instead another message came up. "YOU CANT GO ANYWHERE NOW YOU ARE HERE LLLYYYNNNDDDAAA!!!"

I tried everything to get the game to shut. And being my computer was a laptop, I couldn't just unplug it. So I left it to die instead. After a few hours of the game running, my laptop died and when I rebooted it, I took a screen capture of the icon and put it in the rubbish bin. But after that, strange things happened.

  1. I went to visit my friends memorial plaque at the cemetary a few days later, only to find that her name and the photo of her on the plaque had been removed.
  2. My mother had gone missing and was not seen for months. When she did eventually show up, she claims she had simply gone for a walk.
  3. The people who sold the game to me were deported back overseas a few hours after selling me the game.

I dont want to know what would have happened if I had kept playing the game. And ever since I put the file in the 'bin, I have not seen or heard of it since. I tried googling it, but nothing happened. Everything is normal now, but i doubt I will ever forget the game.
