Faintest Light

Fear of the dark is supposedly mankind's most extreme and innate phobia. For the most part, it represents everything unknown. Everything that will try to harm us in our sleep. We've seen many monsters spawn out of this absence of light. Darkness also gives a feeling of loneliness. When one thinks of this darkness, they think of a place with such visual obscurity that they can't see their hand in front of their face. But contrary to what many think, it is not said darkness which makes us shudder in fright.

Faintest light is what really scares people. The smallest sliver of light spilling in from a cracked door or the glow pouring from a streetlamp at walking distance. Even the deceitfully benign illumination from a nightlight. I know what you're thinking. Preposterous, right? Not so. When there is light in any visible quantity, can there not be shadows? In the utmost black this isn't possible, as there's no lighted canvas for the creepy and grotesque shapes that run rampant in your nightmares. Everything that elicits true and primal fear from you can only be seen with a little light. You see, light is just a compass for things that go bump in the night.

So go to sleep in peace tonight. Turn out your lights. Make sure to let in some luminescence though.

That way we can find you.
