Game Over...

I was an avid gamer when I was just a kid, you know, growing up with games like Super Mario Bros, Legends of Zelda and Metroid. However, we had this game on the Atari 2600 called "Mountain King" it was a very..uh..interesting little game me and my brother used to play as a kid in the 80s. You were a character hopping from mountain to mountain and exploring new mountains to become "the mountain king" there were no monsters or creatures but just you in a void-like area with only your skills and the powers of "Imagination" as my friends put it.

One day on my birthday, my dad bought me a Atari 2600 with the copy of Mountain King in it along with 2 other games and a trackpad. One day, I was researching about the game and learning new things like how the game was made by "CBS Electronics" and how the game was released in the 80s (which at the time, I had no clue it was released way back in the 80s) I decided to plug in a Sega Genesis controller in the Atari 2600 and started messing around.

I jumped one section of the map and started falling and falling, the screen started to flicker and glitch as I panicked that the Atari 2600 might just fry the console, I grabbed the system and turned it off and then turned it back on slowly. The game turned on but it had a almost shiny effect with the area and the background was a weird warped red. As my character moving, it only moved one pixel at a time like it was limping. I unplugged the Sega Genesis controller but the character started moving slowly like it was playing by itself, I plugged an Atari 2600 controller and tried moving right but it kept moving. Suddenly, it stopped as it stared at the corner of a platform like the game was paused or when someone glitched the game like pulling the cartridge or if someone smacked the console just right.

It looked at the side as suddenly, a red faceless creature let out a aggressive scream as it launched upwards and landed on the platform. It unhinged its jaw which was VERY surprising since NO Atari game would have graphics THESE detailed. I stared as the character was sucked into the mouth of this... creature... almost swallowing the creature in a gulp as pixelated screams erupted from the main character. He screamed for almost 2 hours before he was burped out and lain there, presumably dead. The last moment was two words scrolling the screen "GAME OVER". I tried turning off the TV but the words were STILL printed as it was when I played. This "GAME OVER" finally disappeared when I grabbed the cartridge and pulled it off.

The game booted off as I told my parents everything. They believed me and my mom told me "Maybe it was a glitch". I agreed and placed the cartridge in a storage box and moved away. It's been years after the events that unfold. As I'm writing this, my wife inserted the cartridge and screamed as she saw what I saw when I was a kid. It was the character, rotted and now a mortified skeleton with "GAME OVER" scrolled in green letters.
