Gameshark Horrors

Five years ago, I played Pokemon Red. That time, I already beat the Elite Four numerous times, the last time being five years before then. However, upon researching the Internet about glitch Pokemon, I decided to try for myself. I had a Gameshark which I bought at a local flea market. I used it to catch many Pokemon, but mainly glitch Pokemon. I learned the steal trainer's Pokemon code so I can catch Pokemon from the trainers with six glitch Pokemon. I caught a bunch of them and raised all of them up to about level 50. By then, my final team was a level 100 Mewtwo, a level 100 Mew named Dakota (after my celebrity crush Dakota Fanning) and four glitch Pokemon. I decided to name all of my glitch Pokemon after later generation Pokemon. They were named Lucario, Marill, Staravia and Darkrai. All, like any glitch Pokemon, would have a weird set of moves, but I altered their movesets so that they wouldn't have the weird TM moves. Also, none of the Pokemon in my party would cause the game to freeze during battle. So this was great. However, this got boring pretty quickly. I decided to stop the game for a while. A LONG while.

Five years later, I was bored one day and picked up the game again. To my surprise, it still worked. My team was intact but something caught my eye. When I checked the stats of each of my Pokemon, the statuses of the four glitch Pokemon said "Sad". Mewtwo and Dakota were OK but when I checked each of the four glitch Pokemon, THEY CHANGED TO THE SPRITE OF THE POKEMON I NAMED THEM AFTER. I was really excited and I was thinking that maybe this is what happens after leaving a game alone for five years. Somehow, the game would recognize new Pokemon and then recreate them on its cartridge. However, a closer look at them reveals that the four glitch Pokemon looked sad in some way. Lucario was hunched and was looking at the ground, Marill was frowning, Staravia was looking at the ground and its eyes closed and Darkrai's eyes were closed so it looked like its eyes were missing. Anyway, I decided to cheer these Pokemon up by challenging the Elite Four once more.

When I challenged Lorelei, I put my Lucario first. Her Dewgong had the first hit though and it somehow defeated my Lucario in one hit with an Ice Beam. Then, I sent out Marill. Same thing, the Dewgong beat it in one hit. Same thing happened with Staravia and Darkrai. So afterwards, I took out my Mewtwo. He beat the Dewgong and the rest of the party. I soon realized after the battle that I forgot to buy Revives. So only my Mewtwo and Mew were left. I used them to easily sweep the rest of the Elite Four including my Rival, Gary. However, after the final battle, Professor Oak came walking more slowly than usual. He just said "ASH (my player's name), just come follow me". He led me to the hall of fame without saying a word. When I looked at my hall of fame, only two Pokeballs showed up. Not surprisingly, only Mewtwo and Mew were honored at the hall of fame. And when I looked at the Pokedex rating, it said I owned only 2 Pokemon, presumably the Mewtwo and Mew. Then Oak's rating was, "You caught a lot of Pokemon, but you really only used two of them. You need to give a lot more attention to your other Pokemon before I can give you a more accurate Pokedex rating. I am very disappointed in you". I became really creeped out and shut off my game.

I almost threw my game away when I suddenly became very curious of what was going to happen next. I started my game and, like normal, returned to my house in Pallet Town. I went to Professor Oak's lab, but this time, only one of the aides was there, and he told me go to Cerulean Cave where Mewtwo was standing. I then checked my party to realized, only Mewtwo was there. I was wondering where all the other Pokemon were, especially Dakota. Unfortunately, I had to take the long way to Cerulean City because my Mewtwo didn't have any HM moves. I went to Viridian City and checked my PC. Surprising, all the Pokemon I stored in the PC were still there. And all of them looked normal. Even the other glitch Pokemon who I named after later generation Pokemon like Zigzagoon, Shaymin and Pachirisu were all left unchanged. They retained their glitchy sprites. I went through Viridian Forest, Route 3 and Mt. Moon before realizing that I was not getting into any random Pokemon battles. I decided to hang out inside Mt. Moon towards the exit were the fossils were. I wandered around and still no Pokemon fights. I even went around to the other trainers in the Mt. Moon, but all of them spoke to me as if I battled them already. I soon exited Mt. Moon and appeared in Route 4. I almost made it to Cerulean City when I realized a land bridge created between Route 4 and Cerulean Cave. The guy who guarded the cave was no longer there, so I entered in.

When I was in the cave, I took my sweet time finding where Mewtwo used to stand because I, being the idiot I am, was trying to look for wild Pokemon that might be able to help me just in case. Of course, no wild Pokemon came out. So after a while, I reached where Mewtwo was standing. There was Dakota standing there, but her sprite wasn't the normal "Rhydon" sprite, but rather a sprite that actually resembled Mew. She was very pale and her eyes were pink. When I tried to speak to her, she just turned her back to me. I tried to speak to her from the other side, and she turned her back on me again. After about 10 times, she finally spoke to me but still with her with back turned on me. She said,

"Dakota: ASH, you have abandoned us for five years."

"During this time, we have learned how to live on our own."

"All the fake Pokemon that were in your party..."

"...tried everything to get you to like them."

"They tried to make themselves stronger."

"They battled all sorts of wild Pokemon."

"They went as far as transforming themselves into actual Pokemon".

"And yet, you think you are too good for us."

"All your selfishness in hacking us into the game..."

"...and getting those 99 Master Balls, 99 Rare Candies..."

"...and all those other stuff..."

"...we already lost respect for you after doing that."

"But we still, for your sake, tried to continue with you on your journey."

"But then, you abandoning us..."

"...for all this time. That was the last straw."

"That has caused the entire Pokemon World to dislike you."

"Consider me no longer in your team."

"I will be once again a wild Pokemon..."

"...and I'll go my own way."

"Goodbye Forever, ASH".

And the Mew started having blood pour out of her eyes and soon after, the whole cliff turned red. Then the surrounding water also turned red. Finally, everything on the screen except my character was red. Then, the Mew challenged me to a battle. The theme that was used was the final battle theme with Gary. The Mew all of a sudden became Level 255 and it was going against my Mewtwo, who was still only level 100. The Mew sprite was very pale with only the red of its eyes and blood easily visible. The Mew used Psychic on my Mewtwo and it fainted. Then, it said

"ASH is out of usable Pokemon"

"ASH blacked out"

I was once again back in my room. I immediately checked party. I had no Pokemon in my party. I then checked my pack. All the items I obtained by hacking disappeared, leaving only the legit items still there. I just happened to click on the NES in my room. It said that the NES is broken. I went downstairs to my mother. She didn't even turn to me. She said:

"ASH, don't even talk to me"

I went out to Professor Oak's lab. But upon entering, one of the aides ran to me and said.

"ASH, the professor is too busy right now. He says he rather not speak to you".

"As for now, your Pokemon license has been revoked."

"You are no longer allowed to interact with or own any Pokemon."

Then, I left the lab. I went up to Route 1, but all the grass was gone. Even the grass at the sides of the route one can't normally access. The characters were still there, but when I tried to talk to them, no one would answer. When I reached Viridian City, the city was blocked off. I quickly went back to Pallet Town. Upon re-entering the town, all the buildings were gone and all that was there was a black hole. I entered the black hole.

I was now in a room that was pitch black. I couldn't even see my character. But the room had boundaries. I eventually found a narrow path in the room that eventually led to a dead end. I pressed "A" at the dead end and all of sudden, the room lit up and the sprites of all 6 Pokemon in my party showed up. All of them looked pale and their eyes were missing, except for Mew, who still had red eyes and Mewtwo, who was perfectly normal. One by one they spoke to me:

"Darkrai: ASH, how could you do this to us."

"Staravia: We worked so hard for you."

"Marill: And this is how you repay us."

"Lucario: You are a poor excuse for a Pokemon trainer."

"Dakota: It is done, ASH."

"Mewtwo: We will now ban you from the Pokemon world."

The screen then cut to black. After that, a message box came up saying

"YOUR GAME SAVE FILE HAS BEEN DELETED"

"NEVER USE GAMESHARK AGAIN"

I just then turn the game off. I turned it back on after five minutes. After seeing the intro, the continue option was removed, only saying NEW GAME and OPTIONS. I selected NEW GAME, and the game operated as normal. I even named my character a different name. The whole game operated like normal. However, after the first battle with Gary, I just shut the game off. I was very ashamed. Since then, I never played that game again.
