Gru Fights Poverty

Gru is actually a huge advocate for fighting poverty. However being a mad scientist his methods have are often very unconventional. He started with the drug addicted homeless first since he felt bad for them the most and drug addiction was the main cause for homelessness in his city. His solution was to get them addicted to a special type of heroin he invented in his lab that in theory would make them not only happy, but also cure them of their addiction and give them infinite energy to progress toward a better future. Hundreds were collected off the streets and stuck by Gru personally over the course of half a year. The heroin work at first with each of the expected results occurring in those he needled. HOWEVER, the heroin slowly mutated their bodies into that of the mindless things that we see in the films. Feeling great shame for what he did and not having the heart to put them down he adopted them as lab assistants and dubbed them his "minions." In his efforts and through to contain and care for them and through his shame of the monsters he created he has lost many years. Years that he could have used to start a family, to fund local poverty groups, and more importantly to help the world. I believe the comment the Reddit poster is making is a straightforward commentary as to how through Gru's attempt to help the homeless all he has made is minions. Poor innocent souls who's lives were first swept away by the system and then by his attempts to "help." And not Grus, geniuses with the ability to contribute to the world for the better.
