Innocence

A few months ago I decided to NES from my father's house and bring it home. I wanted to finish some of the old games that I never did get to finish, or even start. I brought a few choice games such as, Zelda or Super Mario bros. I wanted to beat Mario bros. first. I had started it and never finished it.

It bothered me I had to finish it before I did anything else. I had no complications with this cartridge. It ran fine, no glitches, nothing. After I beat Mario bros. I moved on to the game I was most eager to play. The Legend of Zelda. I was so excited to finally get to play this game, it was the main reason that I wanted to get my NES back from my father.

However, after I started the game, it wouldn't save, so all the progress from that day was gone. You can't imagine how disappointed I was. I went out to a flea market the very next day to search for another copy of the game. I wondered aimlessly for hours on end until I finally found a copy. It was the only one in the entire market. I walked in, rushed to the game, ran it over to the cashier, and said, "Gimme this."

He looked at me like I was crazy and said, "You're lucky, that's my last one." "I know," I said. "I want it. Gimme gimme," I gave him the money and headed home.

There was nothing peculiar about the cartridge, other than the big red M on the back. I assume it was just the previous owner's initial. I pushed the game into my Nintendo and started to play. The title screen was normal. To my surprise, I pressed start and there was no previous save file. I thought, "How come?" I started a new game, and I was rearing to go.

When I entered the initial cave that you must enter to acquire your sword, a text box appeared over the old man and stated, "Are you ready to play?" I thought it was weird that he would ask me this, but I disregarded it and playfully said, "Hell yeah I'm ready!" Then the game continued as normal with the original text box saying, "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this." The game seemed to continue as normal for most of my play through, until I got to the Lost Hills.

It was here that my game began to screw up. I thought to myself, "NO, NO, NO, NO!" Links character model became disfigured and all the colors changed into this weird rainbowy collage. I became dishearten and wanted to quit, but as I got up and approached the console a text box appeared that stated, "Going so soon?" This disturbed me a bit, but I wanted to continue, to see what would happen when I reached the 5th dungeon. I kept going up and up and up... but to no avail. I became frustrated and decided to look up how to get to the 5th dungeon online. When I watched the video however, the person playing the game simply went up four times and was there. This did anger me but I returned to my console confident that I could reach the dungeon.

I hit start and returned to the lost hills, where a text box asked me, and I'm putting emphasis on asked, "Back again?" I was a little disturbed by this, but I was determined to get to the 5th dungeon. The colors and character models were back normal. I thought that crap was over... I was wrong.

I entered the 5th dungeon and Link's character model became disfigured again and the colors were screwed up once more. I continued through the dungeon fighting the discolored and deformed enemies. But, when fought one of the cakey looking monsters, I was eaten by it (Which I later found out was normal) and had lost all of my items. This enraged me, but I tried to continue through the dungeon without my magical shield or of my other items.

Surprisingly, I reached the dungeon boss. The boss however was not the normal floating light ball thing Digdogger. It was a gigantic cake thing that said, "Let's have some fun." We fought and I somehow managed to defeat the creature. Then a text box appeared again and it read "Beat me once, shame on you." The game then froze, and I was unable to do anything. I couldn't move, attack or return to the title screen. I was a little creeped out but also furious, so I simply turned the console off and tried again later.

I came back some time later and turned on the NES. When I started my save file, I appeared at the start of the game with a text box over head that said, "Ready to try again?" I ignored it and went to recollect the items I had lost. I did notice however, that the game was still having problems. I also noticed something that made me cringe. Link... had no face, but I ventured on. After getting everything back, I was ready to battle the 5th dungeon again.

This time I lost no items to the cakes and reached the boss with good amount of hearts. I entered the room and yet again, another text box appeared saying, "Ready for round two?" The boss was the same, and the fight lasted no longer than it did the last time. But once I defeated the monster a second text appeared that said, "Beat me twice, shame on me," and the game froze again.

At this point, all I wanted to do was kill that little bastard, and move on to the next dungeon. I reset the game, and press start at the title screen. The sprite of Link had no face, and I thought the worse when I had seen that the name of my save file had been changed to []. I started up the game and I had lost all of my equipment again. The texts began to mock me saying things such as, "Angry yet?" I regained my items and returned to the dungeon. I killed everything that stood in my way of getting to the dungeon boss, but once I reached him, I immediately wished that I had just turned the game off.

The room had turned a crimson red and the dungeon boss said to me, "Third time's the charm." This time the monster had no remorse. He was much more difficult than any of the other bosses I had fought, but I managed to beat him. Once more, a text box appeared and said, "Beat me a third time, and I am sentenced to my death." The game froze again and I quit. I was frightened and furious all at the same time.

A few weeks past and I was thinking about playing the game again. I decided to talk to one of my friends that had already beaten the game before started back into that living nightmare. I asked him, "Is the 5th dungeon supposed to be all weird and satanic?" "How do you mean?" he replied. "Well when I reached the boss of the dungeon, he looked like one of those cake looking creatures that-" "Cake monster?" he asked. "You're not supposed to encounter anything that looks like that until you get to the 6th dungeon." He said. "Are you sure you're in the 5th dungeon?" "P-positive," I said reluctantly. I exited the chat room and looked over at my Nintendo. "What the hell?" I thought. I approached the console slowly. Every step was taken with extreme caution. I sat in my chair, leaned forward, and turned on the game.

When I reached the title screen and pressed start, I seen that my save file had returned to normal. The name was Link once again and his face had returned. I chose the save file and what happened next... baffled me.

I had spawned in the cave at the start of the game and one final text box appeared, with what looked like an apology letter. It read, "Please, I didn't mean to make you angry with me. Or frighten you. I-I only wanted to have some fun... eternity... alone. I-it gets quite tiresome. I won't bother you ever again. Please forgive me. Have a good journey. Remember me. My name... my name is Mike."

Nothing strange happened after that. I continued on with the game until I finished it. I never could play it again though. From that time I wondered what it was. I felt awful, I couldn't shake the feeling that had I done something horrible. It only wanted a friend. It's alone... it's alone in this world, whatever it is, it's alone. Alone for eternity, no contact with anyone and I turned it away. I made it feel unwelcome I... I may have been its only shot for companionship and I turned it away! Why! Why did I do that! I... I. I miss it.
