K-ON! Cut Character

If you haven't watched both seasons of the anime K-ON! (the second is called K-ON!!), then this might not make as much sense. I recommend watching them first. Or don't, but be warned that spoilers litter the place. Either way, I'll just assume you have and speak as such.

Let me start off with a proposal that I'm going to attempt to back up: There was originally a male character in K-ON! that was cut from the final version. I couldn't tell you much about him, but the evidence is all there. I'm going to present as much as I could find to you.

First off, in the sequence where the band is shown in its entirety playing the intro song Cagayake! GIRLS, there is a noticeable open space beside Yui Hirasawa. Obviously, this is later replaced by Azusa Nakano. However, this space was originally to be occupied by a male character, who was possibly to fill the role of secondary guitar, but primarily male vocals. We'll come back to this intro later.

In the second intro featuring the song GO! GO! MANIAC!, Azusa automatically is in her place in the band, with no visible gaps. Nothing out of place here. However, the second intro contains two pieces of evidence of a cut character. The first is in the introductory sequences featuring the characters' figures on screen with random clips featuring them playing in the backdrop. One may notice that the song doesn't match up with when these sequences end. It's almost as if there was to be another character, but they edited it out and instead placed more clips of the general show in.

The second, more early evidence is that pairs of the characters are seen running together in the early parts. Azusa and Mugi run together, Mio and Ritsu run together, but Yui runs by herself. There is, however, a large amount of space occupying the right side of the screen. The male character was likely to be featured running by her side.

Another thing I can mention to prove the existence of a cut character is when the class picture is being taken, when Ritsu puts her hand on Yui's shoulder. It seems very disembodied, causing paranoia in a later episode when the picture is featured. It is possible that the male character was to put his hand on her shoulder instead. The hand is also quite large, further evidence that it did not originally belong to Ritsu.

The last evidence I have is that there are several songs that the band plays. However, there are several other songs that are mentioned, but never played on-screen. This claim can prove several things at once, so I will do my best to point out possible facts as they are presented. It is very possible that the anime was designed on a band that created songs, which would probably feature a male singer or guitarist. The songs mentioned are songs that featured the male character.

This can also explain the first intro sequence with Cagayake! GIRLS. It is unlikely that the intro was designed chronologically, and possibly mutated and changed as they designed and improved later and earlier parts so that it would synchronize. Since Afterschool Tea Time was to feature a male character, they had to create space for him. Since they decided to remove this character from the final version, he was edited out of the intro to make room for Azusa to replace him.

The reason Afterschool Tea Time does not play all of the songs they mention because most of them feature the male character, whether it be in the background or in the lead. It would be strange to feature a phantom guitarist/vocalist or have a guest star do it each time, so in the end they didn't even bother, only playing songs that feature only the main members.

The suggested fact that the cut character was to run next to Yui, and originally put his hand on Yui's shoulder, not only indicates that he was male, but also suggests a relationship between the male character and Yui Hirasawa. Further proof is that Yui seemingly jokingly acts romantic towards Azusa and her guitar Gitah at times, mainly to demonstrate her personality, but also demonstrative of them being directed other ways in lieu of a male character.

The lack of male students in the school can help us speculate possible reasons why the male character was cut. Save for some staff, males are in few numbers or not seen at all in the school. A male character being transferred to an all-girls school is a plot that is used quite often, and may be a reason why they scrapped him, but is also indicative of his existence.

Azusa also appears in the manga, and it is possible that they wanted to try something different for the anime. In the end, though, Azusa triumphed, and this can also be reason why he was scrapped. Still, though, it doesn't explain why they couldn't have included him in one way or another. Male voice actors are plentiful, and they could easily have used male background vocals, or at least a male character just for flavor, especially if he was to be Yui's boyfriend.

Now allow me to return to the intros. There's a few more things we can learn from them, the first being that this male character was even attempted to be reintroduced as seen in his attempted appearances in two season intros. The second is that Azusa's character introduction seems to overwrite a few of the random, unimportant sequences shown during the intro sequence of Cagayake! GIRLS. This is not only indicative of a male character originally being written into the first part of the show where they play together as a band, but also that the intro was not made chronologically and all at once. Azusa somewhat awkwardly becomes part of the intro in her character sequence, as if she was not planned to exist in the show originally.

We can now be assured that a male character was originally to exist in K-ON!, but some questions remain. Who was Yui Hirasawa's boyfriend, and what exactly compelled the makers of the show to cut him twice?
