Kayo's Curse

To start off this creepypasta I would like to say that not only is this my first time posting a creepypasta but this is also a true story. I will not stray from the truth as I tell you this story. Kayo is a minor character in one of my favorite video games - The Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass. Even though Kayo is a good character and is relatively friendly in the game... I've had some odd experiences with him. Now for the story...

It was 2008 and I had just gotten my first video game system - a Nintendo DS lite - and I needed a good game to play. I was 10 years old at the time and I had heard quite a bit about how many people loved The Legend of Zelda franchise. I decided to try my first good video game and I marched out on a mission to find a Legend of Zelda game at the local video game shop. I was a complete noob with video games and so I just went right up to the counter and asked for a good LoZ game that I could play on a Nintendo DS Lite.

The boy at the counter was rather skinny and pizza - faced but not at all unfriendly. He handed me a used LoZ Phantom Hourglass game and told me it would be five dollars. As I dug my crumpled cash from my pocket he told me that I should be careful with it and that the prior owner reported that it glitched up every once in a blue moon. After I got the game I rushed back home to whip out my DS lite and get playing.

As I started up the game it seemed completely regular just as the cartridge had and I became absorbed in the game within minutes. The game was completely normal up until I reached the home of Astrid the fortune teller and heard about Kayo. As a normal curious gamer I set out to find him. Once I found Kayo's ghost and started talking to him it all seemed normal until he asked if I would help.

Out of sheer curiosity for what his reaction may be I answered "No."

All of a sudden the game glitched up. Links head was the only spot that glitched though and it had turned black. Normal little glitches where the screen bloops a little black line for a moment isn't anything scary. But it matched links head shape perfectly and stuck like that. The whole game froze whilst a low buzzing sound blasted from the speakers. Taken by surprise, I impulsively shut off the DS and groaned remembering that I had not saved.

Turning it back on it all started up normally again but for some reason I was on The Isle of Ember - though I had known for sure I did not save - but I dismissed this assuming that I had simply forgotten. Going back to find Kayo my DS made a strange buzzing noise again but it was different from the one before and I made out some muffled words:

"Then I shall... Haunt you."

The screen cut to black but then it went back to normal with a cute big-headed link standing patiently for my tap of the stylus.

I figured it was all in my head and went to talk to Kayo. When I did I agreed to help him and everything went normal. I got through the temple and for the rest of the day I happily played the game even letting my brother join in to watch me kill some enemies. I didn't put the game down until midnight when I crawled in bed. But laying there in the quiet darkness I felt very sick. Suddenly it seemed as though I was trying to breathe through a moist towel.

I was about to get up and blow my nose when I suddenly heard the cheerful music of the games title screen. I quickly got up and walked over to my DS to shut it off...only to find that it was off already. But I could hear the music rolling in my ears as though it were being hummed right next to me. I turned on the light feeling frightened but...the moment the lights turned on the music disappeared.

I turned them off and on and off and on noticing that each time the lights were on there was silence replaced by the cheerful music the second I was in darkness. It got louder each time...and eventually I was terrified. I ran into the dark hallway with the music seeming to be following me. I rushed into my brothers room and flicked the light on. After slamming the door I told my brother what had happened. He laughed and said that we should play some battleship for a little bit. I knew he didn't believe me but it was better than nothing.

My dad had been gone for quite some time and my mom was in the hospital after a surgery. My brother was really the only person around. I dragged a sleeping bag from the closet and played battleship for about half an hour. I was absorbed in the board game though I still had some trouble breathing.

Soon he said he was too tired. I had already forgotten what had happened but quickly remembered as he went to the light. I was about to call for him to leave in on.. But it was too late. I heard the music screaming into my ears louder than anything i had ever heard for a split-second before hearing the muttered voice:

"I will... curse you. I will never leave. Never."

When I woke up my hair was drenched in cold water and my brother stood before me with an arsenal of ice water filled dixie cups in his hands. I still had trouble breathing but that was no longer my big concern. It was the dream i just had. In the dream I was standing before the mirror in our bathroom looking into it. My face was all black. Just like links head when it glitched.

My head was black and featureless. I smashed my glitched head into the mirror. It shattered as I bashed myself into it uncontrollably. A low buzz screamed into my ears; then I woke up. I'm 15 now and to this day I have never taken a clear breath after this incident.

I still feel like I'm breathing through a moist towel although I've gone to many doctors all who cannot tell me what the cause is. My brother said that he never heard anything strange after he had turned off the light. He told me that I had made a noise as though I had just gotten the wind knocked out of me and had passed out. I think that i know what did this though.

Now when a video game character asks me a question I always give the answer I would give if they were a real person right in front of me. Because you never know what their reactions could lead to. You never know what could happen.
