Lewis's Warning

You walk down the hallway to the living room to watch TV. The old unused dog door rustled in a breeze outside. You walk to the side of the room, lighting a scented candle and giving some light to the room. You like your little home here at 619 Semple Street; it's really quiet and a nice neighborhood. The only incident was a fire from a tipped candle at 616 the year before because of a tipped candle, a house that was never rebuilt because no one bought the property.

The next time the flap rustled something came in. You twist in your chair to see Lewis, a black tomcat from down the street, slip through the plastic flap. He jumps up on your side table and you rub between his ears. As he pushed up against your hand, his small black paw hits the power button on the remote and Channel 2 lit up the room. Startled by the sudden light and noise, Lewis's eyes flash open before he jumps down. They glow slightly with a bright golden-white color as he hops over the edge of the table. You look up at the TV and check the time. You see the clock on the news station reads 5:40. Looking at the two digital clocks you have in the living room, they say 5:10. You hear a contented sigh as Lewis settles himself by a vent in the corner of the room. As you're trying to figure out the time issue, a story catches your attention.

"We're here at 619 Semple Street, where a fire has devastated this household. Officials say there were no remains among the ashen rubble."

You snap your head around and stare, horrified, at the screen as they show a Live Picture of your house, or what used to be your house. All that remains is the frame and blackened rubble. You realize this must mean something, because obviously your house is fine now. Suddenly you see something black move in the back of the live picture. It stops and blinks right at you once and moves on, slipping into the woods. It's Lewis. You look for the black tomcat by the vent but he wasn't there anymore.

As you get up to leave, it hits you like a blow to the head.

Lewis died in the fire of 616 the year before.
