Lost Hope

There was screaming and shouting in the barricades. Soldiers pointed their guns at the crowds of desperate people, their faces ridden with guilt. In all this chaos, Nick pushed through the crowd, holding Mia's hand. Mia was carrying Emily in her other arm, as Nick ran to a soldier.

"Please! We've been chosen!"

The soldier looked at his clipboard.

"Last name?"

"Sanders!" Nick said desperately. The soldier skimmed the clipboard, then nodded.

"Come on. Quickly!" The soldier snapped. Nick, Mia, and Emily pushed past the soldiers, as people began yelling and screaming.

"WHY DO THEY GO?!"

"TAKE MY DAUGHTER! PLEASE! JUST MY DAUGHTER!"

"AND WE'RE LEFT TO DIE IN THIS HELLHOLE!?"

Nick, Mia, and Emily ran past armed soldiers, their guns on their chests. A soldier ran over to the trio and grabbed Emily.

"Come on!" The soldier said. "We're almost there!"

The screaming and yelling was only getting louder. Soldiers, yelling at the crowds of people, aiming their guns directly at their heads. Mia was crying softly.

"They're just leaving people there!" Mia said. Nick sighed.

"At least we're safe. At least Emily's safe. That's all that matters," Nick said.

"ALL THAT MATTERS?!" Mia screamed in between sobs and gasps, "We're leaving people to die out there!"

"Mia. MIA!" Nick yelled. "Look at me! Look at me!"

Mia looked in Nick's stern eyes, her red, bloodshot eyes meeting Nick's. Mia set down Emily, and held her hand tightly.

"Don't think about them. Think about us!" Nick yelled. The soldier stopped.

"Come on! You wanna die?!" The soldier yelled. The cool spring breeze moved among the clearing. Trees danced in the wind. There was a large platform, and a panel, where a soldier was standing. Nick, Mia, and Emily ran to the soldier.

"Stand on the platform," The soldier instructed. Nick, Mia, and Emily stepped on the platform. Suddenly, there was yelling and gunshots on the other side of the clearing. The soldier turned to see another soldier running towards them.

"LOWER THE PLATFORM!" The soldier yelled. The platform slowly began lowering, going down into the ground. Suddenly, a man grabbed Mia, while another grabbed Emily, right off the platform.

"If we can't go, they can't go!" The man yelled. The soldiers aimed their guns at the two men. Nick tried jumping up to them, but the jump was too high.

"MIA! NO! MIA!" Nick yelled, his voice cracking. Mia ran to the platform.

"NICK!" Mia screamed. "TAKE EMILY!"

Nick reached out his hands, but the platform was too far down. There were two gunshots, followed by two thuds.

"NO! MIA! NO! I CAN'T!" Nick was yelling now. He ran to a soldier inside the platform.

"RAISE THE DAMN PLATFORM!" Nick pleaded.

"I can't sir." The soldier said. "We've already descended."

"NO! MIA!" Nick was desperate now. Mia extended her hands, before she grabbed Emily.

"Tell Daddy you love him," Mia said, beginning to cry again. Emily was crying also, as Mia embraced Emily.

"It's OK," Mia said. "You're going to be a princess now,"

Nick was banging on the platform's walls now.

"NO! RAISE THE DAMN GATE! MY WIFE, DAUGHTER, THEY'RE STILL UP THERE!"

Nick slumped down in defeat, sobbing. There was a sudden burst of orange flames, as the screaming and yelling died out. Everyone on the platform was yelling, screaming, and crying. Nick was sobbing still, tears hitting the hard, yellow, metal, before closing his eyes.

Nick opened his eyes. There were dead bodies everywhere, slumped every which way on the hard, cold, metal floor. Nick was holding a bloody piece of glass, his shirt covered in blood. A dead body laid in front of him, a soldier, the soldier from all that time ago. Nick looked around, blood splattered on the wall and on the ground. Nick began chuckling, the chuckles turned to outright laughter. Nick was laughing, his laugh echoing on the metal walls. The laughter was almost insane, psychopathic, as Nick gripped the glass shard tightly, laughing insanely.

There was no one left. It was just him now. A broken, insane, man.
