Memories Of Monsters

I have this bizarre childhood memory that I can vividly recall happening despite the fact that I know full well that it makes no logical sense whatsoever. I have constantly replayed this memory in my mind over and over again, desperately trying to figure out any possible explanation as to how something like this could've happened.

One night when I was probably around two or three years old, I woke up in the middle of the night to get a drink but I couldn't find my juice cup anywhere. I tried looking all over the place until I finally decided to check the last place, the one I had been dreading the entire time: Under the bed!

Considering how young I was, I obviously still believed that monsters dwelled under the bed. I was terrified of what I may find under there but then I remembered all the times that my parents reassured me that monsters weren't real. When I finally got the courage to reluctantly check under there, I saw something that absolutely shook me to my core.

It was a living creature that was unlike anything else I've seen before. I know this may sound pretty strange but this being literally resembled a Muppet! It was a giant, pink, Muppet-like bunny with big yellow eyes, a long lizard tail, sharp fangs, and bony claws. Despite it's strong resemblance to a Muppet, this being was very clearly alive so it didn't move like a puppet whatsoever. Seeing a creature that looked like a puppet but moved like a human was incredibly uncanny. Never before had I seen a Muppet make realistic facial expressions like that.

This one had a look of pure anger on it's face. If there was ever a way that a Muppet could look downright furious, this was it. The monster then proceeded to hiss at me in a snake-like fashion. I was absolutely petrified looking at this thing, I was unable to even move a muscle out of fear.

Just when I thought things couldn't get any creepier, it started speaking! But it didn't use any words that I knew. It spoke some bizarre alien-like language in a deep, gravelly voice. I had no idea what to do but for some reason, I decided to reach out and touch the monster. Perhaps it was my way of trying to determine once and for all whether or not I was hallucinating. As soon as I gently placed my shaky hand upon it's head, the beast scratched me on the arm with it's sharp claws! That scratch was the most painful thing I've ever had to endure. All I could do was scream as loudly as I possibly could, waking up my mom in the process.

I explained to my mom what happened and for obvious reasons, she had a hard time believing me. She wasn't accusing me of lying, it was just that such a story quite naturally sounded unbelievable to her as I'm sure it would to most people. She gave me a bandage to put on my arm and told me I could sleep with her for the rest of the night.

To this day, I have no idea what kind of strangeness I had witnessed on that fateful night. My theory is that perhaps I had encountered an alien. Muppets and bunnies were both two things that I was very much interested in at the time so it could've maybe used some sort of cloaking device to disguise itself as that. While I don't know what it was, I do know this for a fact: I sure as Hell hope I never have to encounter the creature ever again!
