On January 11, 2008, a new version of the Half Life 2 modification Garry's Mod had been released. With this update, all of my maps that I had downloaded were gone, along with my add-ons. This was to be expected, and this usually happens with most big updates. I thought the game was a bit boring without my maps and add-ons, so I went on the website where I usually got them from.

I clicked on the website, and I noticed everything looked fine. However, when I started scrolling downwards, I noticed a lot of the mods that I used to have were gone. I assumed that it was because they were updating them for the new update of the game. But there was this one map that caught my attention. It was simply called MrGman.bsp.

(For those who do not know, The G-Man is a character in the Half Life video game series. He is known for being found in several parts of the game watching and even following the main character Gordon Freeman).

I always knew this map had existed, but it was such an odd one out on the website. It always had the same info. "Uploaded: 0 days ago Downloads: 0 Downloads." This has always puzzled me, considering I have noticed this same map for three years, yet it said it was uploaded "0 days ago".

Another thing that had made me confused was the description. ".delaever neeb sah mih tuoba hturt eht, yllanif". After staring at that description for a long while, I noticed that it was "Finally, the truth about him has been revealed." written backwards. My suspicion overcame me, and I hit the download button.

The description did not put me off, I thought it could have just been written by some obsessed fan who has strange theories about the G-man. Once the map had finished downloading I opened the zip file, and in there was a folder simply entitled "g-man". Inside as expected, there lay a bsp file (the file used for Half Life 2 maps and levels), and a text file with information on how to install.

I didn't bother to read the text file, as I already know how to install the map.

Finally, the map installed.

The map had loaded up. It was disappointing to say the least. It was just the beginning of Half Life 2, entitled "Point Insertion". There was only a minor difference. The map looked as if it had less colour. It looked very cold and almost black and white. However, once I got to the town square that was when I began to notice much larger changes.

Firstly, all of the NPCs (Non-playable characters) were gone. The streets were completely empty. There wasn't even any pigeons or crows like their usually are. Another strange thing was that there was no Citadel (The tall building in the city centre).

I was already creeped out by the lack of NPCs and the intense feeling of loneliness in the city. But what made my fear rise to it's peak was when the was suddenly a bright flash, and the ground began to shake.

I had no idea what was happening. Suddenly, all colour drained away from the map, making everything a dark monochrome. Then, the colour began to invert. The player staring at the column in the town centre, where the screen is. I had no control of the player, he wouldn't move. In the original Half Life 2 game, a character called Dr. Breen is speaking on the screen, but instead, it was just a still picture of the G-man. But it wasn't the Half Life 2 G-man, it was the Half Life 1 G-man. His eyes were white and glowing, and had tints of red on the corners.

At this moment I was thinking about quitting the game, but I didn't, I just kept playing. Then the picture on the screen looked as if it began to melt away. Then suddenly out of nowhere, there was this sudden horrific scream. It roared out of the speakers and caused my desktop to shake. Once it was over, there was silence.

I regained control of the player, and I looked up at the screen on the column. The G-man's face was still on it. It's eyes stared at wherever you stepped. There was then a loud crash and my monitor went black. It was black for about a minute, and then there was the faint sound of talking. However, it was distorted. It sounded like the G-man's speech at the end of Half Life 1. I didn't know what to do, I was too worried to do anything. The past five or ten minutes were some of the most horrific moments I have ever experienced in Garry's Mod.

But it was not over, there was then sounds of scratching. This scratching lasted five minutes. I felt a bit more relaxed once the scratching stopped.

Then suddenly, a new map loaded up. It was a chapter from the original Half Life 2 entitled "We Don't go to Ravenholm" (Ravenholm being a town in Half Life 2). However, it looked different. But unlike minor differences like the previous map, there were major differences. It was the Half Life 2 Beta version. Which is nearly impossible to download, let alone find. As I walked, text appeared on the screen "Here, the truth shall be revealed." This text was obviously referring to the description when I downloaded the map.

I walked into one of the buildings. It was empty, no zombies like in the original. There was also a window, which was not on the original map. I looked out of it. The sky began to overexpose, then a still of the G-man's face appeared. I took my hands off the keyboard and began to back away from my computer, hoping that this bizarre gaming nightmare would end. Thankfully, as I hoped, the screen went black.

I could then hear talking, once again it was the G-man. His voice was distorted, the first or sometimes the last letter of each word in this sentence would be cut off, and when he spoke their would be a small static like sound in the background. He simply uttered the words "Cleverly done Mr. Freeman, but you're not supposed to be here, as a matter of fact, you're not. Get back where you belong and forget about all this. Until. We meet. Again..."

The game crashed.

I knew this sentence was suppose to be used in the original Half Life 2 game. However, it was never used. I was almost certain that this was just fancy Source Editing (Source = The game engine). I opened MrGman.bsp on the map editor, but found no signs of editing. It was just the maps "Point Insertion" and "We Don't go to Ravenholm Beta", not to mention that I could not find any of the sound files used. I searched the map in great detail for hours. I found nothing, nothing at all.
