My favorite YouTuber has become a Cajun cooking channel and I'm the only one who notices

A month ago, gamer_grape94 had maybe done two cooking vids, and they were both gags. You know, the kind of thing where you set up really nice and professional and then just make hot dogs or ramen or whatever. They were funny, I suppose, but he never seemed like he was going to turn into a cooking channel or something. I never really cared for his joke videos anyway. I followed GG for his game streams and his commentaries on internet drama and the news.

I also liked the little community that formed around him. We had all these inside jokes and bits. It sounds stupid but it always made me smile when I scrolled down to the comments and saw the inevitable old friends saying "HAM POOTS" and "It's a wild ride for a turtle."

But on December 4th, something changed. I remember the date because I must have come back to that video a hundred times. As things got worse and worse I would re-watch it, trying to find a clue, some further information on what happened to my favorite YouTube star.

The video is about twice as long as usual: 33 minutes. It starts with gamer_grape94 walking out into his kitchen in a bizarre outfit. His hair is slicked back, he's wearing a bolo tie and bright red suspenders, and his khakis are pulled way up over his stomach. His personality hasn't changed yet; while he cooks the red beans and rice, he tells the same stories he's always told, but there's a trace of something strange in his voice, a kind of drawl.

The comments are what really freaks me out, particularly now after all this time. There are far fewer comments than normal, and they all seem to be watching a different video. There's the regular inside jokes, and a couple people are discussing Alyssa, GG's girlfriend, even though she never appears once while he's making the red beans and rice. When I first read all the comments back in December, I thought YouTube had simply had a glitch, but I know they're watching a different video than I am. They're still in the old world.

And that's how it's been for a month. Every day GG uploads a new video where he cooks a Cajun specialty. He stopped telling stories about Minecraft and Reddit and started rambling about someone named Louis Gaspar and his "ol' huntin' dawg Marie." Actually, sometimes he doesn't cook. He'll sit at his dining room table with a scratchy zydeco record in the background and he'll gorge himself on crawdads and okra.

Last week he stopped speaking English. I couldn't understand a thing he said, and I didn't know where I could find a French speaker to help. At the end of the video, he made himself 'a Sazerac and said, "Laissez les bons temps rouler!"

I cried when that happened. I felt like I'd lost a friend and I had no idea who I could talk to. The comments still don't notice that he's changed. They make reference to things that didn't happen in the video. When I commented and asked what the hell was going on, people acted like I was insane. Some of them even blocked me.

That was week ago. I still watch and go over these videos obsessively. I never look at his old content anymore. In a way I'm starting to enjoy them. I found a bolo tie in my closet this morning. I've never worn one of those in my life. I think I'm going to the store and get me some red beans and rice.
