Puzzle Box

My grandfather recently went on holiday to China. He and I had a good relationship, ever since my Dad died when I was a young age.

I was happy for him, because the depression of the UK was getting to him and he deserved a break. I asked him to bring me back something—anything.

I'm something of a geek, so when my grandfather returned, he gave me a Chinese puzzle box.

Asking about it, he said he picked it up at a market stall, the man who served him was short and balding and wearing tweed, but didn't enquire about it further.

When I received it, I curiously slid and locked parts into place and to my excitement, it opened.

Slip upon slip of paper poured out of it, most newspaper reports, graphically detailing murders—mostly carried out in a remote area and using methods such as burying alive or hanging, but a troubling similarity was that they were all young women in their 20s.
