Smoking Caterpillar Commercial
Do you remember the smoking caterpillar commercial? Not many people do. It's been considered lost media for many years (the image from the commercial has been popularized by its use in memes; this is the only known capture of it).
It's said that on May 7th, 2005, this ad aired only a couple of times on select channels, and hasn't been seen again. The ones who remember it, especially as children, were very terrified by this ad.
It starts off with an uncanny caterpillar sitting on a branch, looking directly at the audience. His voice sounds awful. He sounds like Popeye if he had an upper respiratory infection. The caterpillar only speaks in gibberish that can't be understood by the viewer. A large cigarette can be seen in his mouth, and he's puffing away on it as he chews out the audience, for unknown reasons. Suddenly, the caterpillar falls off the branch, and starts choking, and as he hits the ground, he dies a very agonizing death, with very unsettling noises playing.
The camera zooms into his open mouth, and inside it starts to show gruesome photos of human lungs ravaged by cigarette smoke, while very slow, morose "music" plays. A scary, low pitched voice that sounds like James Earl Jones keeps repeating the words "Just say no. Just say no. Just say no." as the photos flash on screen faster and faster, until it ends with the sound of a flatline.
A message appears onscreen as it shows the caterpillar's dead body once again: "'From the womb to the tomb, smoking will be your doom.' - Abraham Lincoln", although it's very doubtful that Abe Lincoln actually said that, which mystified viewers even more.
Stranger yet, the commercial stayed black for quite a while after airing, and many TV viewers complained of it. Nobody knows who made this commercial (since there was no ending PSA copyright notice), or if anyone managed to record it.
