Sonic's True Colors
I'm a Sonic the Hedgehog superfan. I buy the new games when they come out, watch the shows, read the comics, I even still sleep with a Sonic plushie. Sonic himself is my favorite media character and that won't change ever, even after the experience I had.
You're probably expecting a story about how Sonic either became or got attacked by a satanic entity possessing a game, but this story isn't about that. Rather, it's about how I found out about a real issue that exists within Sonic's world
I was awaiting the release of Sonic Frontiers and decided to go back to some older Sonic games, including one of my favorites Sonic Colors. I still had the box but the disc itself had been lost to time. So I went to my local game store and browsed their Sonic games until I found the first copy of Sonic Colors I came across.
This one looked different. It still had the normal art of Sonic jumping in Tropical Resort, but the name was different. The game's box had True written under Sonic's name in marker, making the name of the game Sonic's True Colors. I figured it didn't matter as I would be putting the disc in my normal Sonic Colors box, so I bought the game and went home to play it
I put the disc in my Wii U and booted up the game. The normal opening in which Sonic runs with the Wisps played as normal, but the title screen had changed. Instead of Sonic jogging towards the camera surrounded by Wisps, it showed Sonic and Amy walking together by a seaside cliff while the sun set. The games title was Sonic's True Colors, much like on the box.
You might've expected me to be annoyed that this was a hacked game, but that couldn't be further from the truth. I had played hacked Sonic games before, but those were just ones that added new levels for Sonic to zoom through into the classic Sonic games. I'd never seen one for a 3D Sonic game. Combine that with me shipping Sonamy and I was kinda excited to see what this hack had in store.
I started a new file on this Sonamy fangame. Instead of Tropical Resort Act 1, the first stage now read Paradise City Adventure Field. Sonic then spawned in a seaside town outside of what I assumed to be his house. I was blown away. A hub world in a Sonic Colors hack?! These people must be mad talented. I let Sonic run around and explore the town. After a while, a cutscene started. Sonic met Amy near a park bench overlooking a cliff by the sea similar to the title screen. "Hey Amy, hope I'm not late" Sonic said to Amy
"You're just in time Sonic" was Amy's response "I always look forward to our weekly dates"
"I do too" Sonic said, "It's nice to catch up with my special someone over chili dogs frequently"
Out of nowhere, Sonic pulled out a bag containing two chili dogs and gave one to Amy. Must've missed where he got those from.
"These moments are so special to me Sonic" Amy said whilst the two of them overlooked the sunset. "I wish they could happen forever"
"Well, do you want them to happen forever?" Sonic asked
"Sonic, you don't mean" Amy said
"I do" Sonic said as he pulled out a gold ring identical to the ones he collects throughout the levels "Amy Rose, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife" Sonic said. "Yes, Sonic, yes" Amy said. Sonic and Amy hugged each other as they both started to cry. The cutscene ended and to tell you the truth, I was starting to cry too. I was so happy for Sonic (as he is my favorite media character of all time)
The next level read "Downtown Dash Act 1". It played more like a traditional Sonic level, with Sonic jumping, boosting, and homing attacking his way through a level similar to Skyscraper Scamper from Sonic Unleashed. The big difference was Sonic. He still had his normal shoes and gloves, but also had on a black jacket and a bow tie. I pieced together everything immediately. This was confirmed as Sonic got through the level and the next cutscene played. Sonic and Amy got married. It was what you'd expect a Sonic wedding to be like. Sonic gave Amy a gold ring, the two of them kissed, all of Sonic's friends like Tails and Knuckles applauded them, and Sonic and Amy lived happily ever after...
Except it wasn't that simple.
You'd think that, given the next level. This was called Honeymoon Resort, and played identical to Acts 1 and 3 of Tropical Resort from the normal Sonic Colors, except with a normal sunny sky and Sonic now resembling his Summer Sonic skin from Sonic Speed Simulator. From what happened, Sonic and Amy were at a resort for newly married couples. From how happy the 2 were, it looked like the start of a lovely relationship.
Sonic's story began to go downhill from there
As the level ended, another cutscene began. Sonic and Amy were inside Sonic's house in what was clearly a bedroom. It looked like Amy was forcing Sonic to do something he didn't want to do.
"Amy, I said no!" Sonic exclaimed
"I've waited forever for this moment, why don't you want to Sonic?" Amy asked
"Amy, it's not as simple as you want it to be. I don't think I'm ready" Sonic said
"You've defeated Eggman and saved the planet from doom dozens of times, what's different about this" Amy asked.
"Amy, this isn't the same as that. This is something permanent, something life changing. I know in my heart this is something I don't want to do!" Sonic responded to back up his argument.
"Fine then Sonic!" Amy exclaimed. "You won't take that step, I'll do it for you"
Amy moved in on Sonic. Sonic looked noticeably scared. The screen cut to black, silence.
Out of nowhere, the sound Sonic makes when you lose a life in Sonic Unleashed came blaring out.
The next levels title card read "Alone. Adventure field"
Sonic spawned outside his house, but there was something very different. He wasn't smiled. Rather, he had a sad look on his face, as if all the normal spark he had was gone. I went exploring and found Tails. I tried talking to him and a conversation between the two popped up.
"I'm sorry Sonic" Tails said
"Are you really though?" Sonic asked "Because last I checked, you weren't. You victimized someone who was in the wrong. What did you to me, your best friend. Left me in the lurch."
"Sonic..." Tails said
"Tails, I think I need to be alone for a bit" Sonic said depressingly.
That was odd, wasn't Tails supposed to be someone Sonic trusted? I ignored that and kept exploring the hub world. I tried talking to a multitude of people. Knuckles, Cream, Sonic's parents, Sonic even had the option to talk to Eggman. With all of them, Sonic had the same conversation he had with Tails, about how they wrongly victimized someone who wasn't in the wrong. There was one more person Sonic could talk to, that being Amy. Given what happening in the last cutscene, I didn't know how this would go. I hit the button to talk to Amy.
What happened next shocked me
"Why did you do it Amy?" Sonic said, with a tone in his voice that showed he wasn't playing around
"What do you mean Sonic?" Amy said
"DON'T PLAY DUMB WITH ME AMY!" Sonic exclaimed, showing how he'd lost his temper "YOU DID THIS! YOU PLAYED VICTIM! BECAUSE OF YOU, EVERYONE HAS TURNED AGAINST ME! AS IF IT WASN'T ENOUGH FOR 1 PERSON I TRUST TO DO THAT!"
I pieced together what happened instantly after that. Sonic had been forced into "making babies" (that's for any children present) with Amy, and Amy tried making it out so that Sonic had done the wrong thing, turning all his friends against him.
"Should've done it when you had the chance hon" Amy responded. That last word shocked me as thanks to everything that had happened I'd entirely forgot Sonic and Amy were technically married.
Sonic had a look on his face that made him look like he had a lot of emotions he wanted to lash out at Amy at that moment. Instead of doing that though, he left and ran away. As Sonic was doing this, he finally broke and began to cry.
The hub world loaded again, now reading "Revenge, Adventure Field" Sonic spawned near the cliff he proposed to Amy. This time, there was a clear place Sonic had to go. It was clear Sonic had some form of revenge in mind. This was hinted by the dialogue he said during the run there. He said stuff such as "You did this to me" and "I'm going to show you what it's like to lose everything". Sonic arrived at the location that turned out to be... his house. That was when I learned the exact person Sonic was going to get revenge on. I entered the house and wandered to the bedroom. Amy was in there, behind the lock on cursor that appears when you're supposed to do a homing attack. Given how I seemed to be the only person at this moment actually sympathizing for Sonic, I did the Homing Attack. The screen cut to black. Sonic's model appeared, full of energy and complete with his normal smile and everything. He said "Thanks for supporting me friend, you got my life back on track" I said "You're welcome Sonic. I'll always be here for you" before the game went back to the title screen.
With that, I took the game back and traded it for a normal Sonic Colors, happy to see my favorite media character Sonic blitz through normal Sonic Colors stages, save Wisps, beat up robots, and never have to suffer that fate, hopefully, ever again.
