Greetings, I'm Tom (y'know, the guy who wrote Sonic.exe), this is the first time that I've written a story in years, ever since my disaster that was Sonic.exe.
If you're wondering what happened to my love for Sonic, it's died down, I began to lose interest in it as I not so much of a gamer anymore after graduating from school, though I've had an experience with a Sonic fan game that I think is worth sharing.
You see, I was replaying Sonic Adventure on another summer afternoon, with that now cleaned blood-stained Sonic plushie I now had sitting next to me (don't worry, he isn't possessed). While I was busy playing, though, my mailman had arrived and put something in my mailbox, I paused my game and got curious to see what was inside, but what was inside the mail gave me some bad memories...
It was, you guessed it, a CD containing a note.
I was instantly reminded of the time I had played that Sonic fan-game you all know, and hate, or somehow still like. I was a bit hesitated to even see what the game was about, even if I now know that the game wasn't that scary, I was a bit worried that it would actually be scary and not an edgy blood fest.
However, I decided to take a peep on the note paired with the CD, it was from my new best friend, Ryan (since my friend Kyle sadly died), this is what it read:
"Dear Tom,
I found this CD from a shoddy Sonic fan hack website, simply called "Sonic.BNS",
I played, and it's alright, nothing too memorable, but I think it's worth a try.
You should go try out this game, maybe refresh your mind of Sonic as you play it, too.
Your dear friend, Ryan ;)"
This calmed me down a bit, Ryan's a close and loyal friend of mine, so I trusted his what he had to say. I finally inserted the CD into my PC and waited for the mod to boot up.
The game began like how Sonic 1 usually does, up until I began playing, the title screen had shifted for a split second, the only major detail that I remember is that Sonic's pupils were colored green, other than that it had seemingly had no relevance in this game.
The game begun on a save select screen, just like Sonic.exe, there were ones for Tails, Knuckles & Eggman, with the latter two locked, there were three major differences, however:
- The static was simply just a blank white screen.
- The background's color was to be a light blue, instead of a dark red.
- No laugh played when I selected Tails.
Other than that, nothing else was different.
Tails' level was simple, basically like a tutorial of sorts, there was nothing of note in it, other than the end, where Sonic was standing, right behind the sign that indicates the end of a level. Sonic had turned around, and he looked perfectly fine, just with green pupils instead of his usual black ones.
A text box appeared for Sonic and said the following: "HEY TAILS, YOU FEELIGN DOWN?"
Tails shook his head.
Sonic, seemingly oblivious to Tails' response, said: "DONT WORREY, ILL HELP YOU OUT!" He glided towards Tails, grabbed him by the arm and took him along for the ride.
I was then taken to "LVL 2" and good lord, I don't think I've ever seen a level designed this badly.
There were spikes everywhere, barely any checkpoints, enemies coming from nowhere, it felt like it was intentionally trying to be the worst Sonic level. And the fact I also haven't played a Sonic game in so long made this level even worse for me. It took hours to beat this level. After what felt like a day, I finally beat the goddamn level and was treated to a cutscene.
Tails was visibly tired, his fur was messy, he was sweating, he was panting, and his hands were on his knees, while "Sonic" (who now had green eyes and magenta pupils for some reason) was just staring at him, showing no emotion, he spoke up saying : "FEELING BETTER, BUDDEY?", tails didn't even react, he just fell flat on his face. Sonic simply ignores this, and says: "NOW LETS STOP THAT EGG MAN BEFORE HE CAUSES TROUBLE!!", and proceeds to fly to the sky, complete with a goofy whistle sound effect.
Once the cutscene finished, it went back to the save select, Tails had dissappeared from his spot, and the blank screen above him changed, it showed a comppresed graphic of "Sonic" giving a thumbs up, with the text "YOU NOW ARE COMPLETE!" above him, Knuckles was now unlocked for me.
I was confused, how did Ryan, in any way, think this was a good game? Did he just want to mess with me? If so, I don't mind, this game is a bit funny, Sonic's weird behavior did crack a smile out of me. I took my mind off of Ryan's note, selected Knuckles, and proceeded to the next level, which hopefully wouldn't be as bad as "LVL 2".
