Sonic 2 Beta

The mysterious Japanese text screen in Sonic 1

Recently, I started playing Sonic games. I've played "Sonic Classic Collection" on my DS on a day of boredom.

After I finished, I decided to look through more sonic games, and I found really fun Sonic the Hedgehog hacks on Sonic Retro; because almost all Sonic hacks I've played were shitty.

But now I have an abundance of hacks in my DS Emulator "JenesisDS"

Until then I started looking for more Sonic goodness, There was Sonic 2 HD, Sonic Fangames, Engines, and I was surprised with all the fun things I found. I have (or had...) afFriend which is a Sonic fanboy, we used to play much Mario, but also Sonic, of course.

Starting the Sonic the Hedgehog Interess I started looking on for Information, I heard then about Hidden Palace, Wood, Genocide City, and more canceled beta Zones.

There was lots of Hacks trying to show how they would look as if they were in the final version, until I found on Sonic Retro, Official Beta releases of Sonic 2 Brought by Simon Wai and DRX. I was feeling like I had a Rarity on My Hands, uh, computer, heh. I played them and was amazed with the beta elements present there, Playing through the development of Hidden Palace Zone and Wood Zone, but the Simon Wai beta made me cry a little since acessing Dust Hill Zone leads you to the Mystic Cave Zone instead. Then I found out that era they were planning to add Time Travel (just like in Sonic CD) to the Game, And release it to the CD. But it failed. SEGA of America was producing Sonic 2 While SEGA of Japan was producing Sonic CD on the same era.

Then with my thoughts on, Wood Zone had the same music of Metropolis, May Wood Zone be the Past of Metropolis? May Hidden Palace be the past of Oil Ocean? May Genocide City be the past of Casino Night?

Those thoughts are many, with many people talking about it. I downloaded Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Nick Arcade Betas (Dumped by DRX), Simon Wai, and the next releases by DRX, Beta 4, 5, and 7 (I Wasn't interessed in downloading 6 and 8) But then, at the Sonic Retro forums, I Found out a Private Message, a user gave out a link, it said: "It's not my fault, I swear" and then the link. The message was odd, but anyways, I downloaded to see what it was, It began starting a Zipped file, For my surprise it said "Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1st Beta Ever).zip"

I was surprised that the user has found the first beta of the game, that means it is a Beta made before Nick Arcade Release! The file has downloaded.

I Couldn't belive my eyes I had the first beta ever. I zipped the file and expected a ROM File. But not, it was an EXE File instead. Strangely, but then I had my thoughts... Remember SEGA was planning to make Sonic 2 on SEGA CD? As Sonic CD was released on PC too... I went and ran the File. It was as I suspected.

Same SEGA Screen from Sonic 1 (Because Sonic 2 was entirely made off Sonic 1) But for an odd reason, instead of the SEGA Singers singing a beautiful SEGA Choir, it was low pitched, but never mind that, Making a new game out of an old one should expect many surprises.

After that the title screen showed up only Sonic, there was no Tails in it, Instead of his usual "No Way" sign with his hand were missing, only the arm was shown (waving still) They should have removed the hand for beta usage maybe, I ignored that, and for my surprise, Chemical Plant (named Chemical Factory that time) was the first level to acess. And as I suspected the title card was in Sonic 1 Style, the Bluish Purple sphere going to the middle with the text "Chemical Factory Zone, Act 1", As beta was earlier than Nick Arcade, it should contain Sonic 1 Songs, but... Strangely, Hydrocity Zone music from the later game was playing instead of what should've been Green Hill Zone (or whatever Chemical Plant goes in the order of the level select screen) , I Thought: That music was mantained in archives and later used in Sonic 3, but still I couldn't belive it. And, WTF. There was Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Player Sprites instead of the first 2 Games sprites, I knew something was wrong. The level keep the same unless it had an Odd pallete. I could recognize the colors. It was from... Labyrinth Zone? Yeah, the same goes for the Background. It was odd that It replaces Labyrinth Zone since in Nick Arcade beta Chemical Plant was replacing Marble, but well, that was an Early beta, I ignored it again.

I ran through the level normally. I got 50 Rings on the level. I Tried checking out if they had already implemented Super Sonic on it, I Double Jumped in, and Suddently Sonic has turned into... Rouge?! Or it was a Bat that looks like Rouge, or it was the real Rouge, because it was really looking. Instead of the Super Sonic song it was playing the invencible Song. That was okay. "Rouge" was able to do anything Super Sonic does. I even passed the level with it. For my surprise yet again, The Signpost was showing Sonic's Head instead of Eggman's, Just like if Sonic had already passed in. I went to the Signpost, it spinned, and had shown Eggman's face, Like if it were the Opposite thing it should happen on Sonic 2. And... no, it can't be. The Text appeared saying:

"Rouge has Passed act 1"

After that I was taken to Chemical Factory act 2, But it was a blank level, yet solid. Sonic wasn't Rouge anymore. The music was repeated sounds of the Starpost (the Checkpoint thingy) in which started to annoy me. After 5 Seconds Sonic died, and it gave a Game over, then I heared... Eggman's laugh? That was still funny. But I was a bit scared. After game over screen, a Glitched screen showed up with the Title Song, After the song stopped, The game has taken me to the Title Screen. But that Time, Palletes were Glitchy causing the Odd Japanese message that appears in "Sonic Team Presents" in Sonic 1 to appear. After that the same Title Screen has shown up. But this time, instead of the strange fact that Sonic had not his Arm, there was a red thing on his arm then I thought it was blood. It makes sense but I don't think it's possible. I tried inputting Sonic 1 Level Select code. After that, it took me to the level select screen... with Sonic 3's Data Select Music!

I was a bit scared, but not too much, when I made a joke like, "Yeah, it looks like SEGA really did make Time Travel in this game..." if you get it. Another odd thing, the level select screen was fully with:

"Dont Acess Zone" unless the Zone which replaced Labyrinth, but it showed the text:

"Hydrocity Zone"

Now I was scared. I acessed the Sound Test to see what is going on with the soundtrack.

The Sound Test was from 00 to FF, strangely, since Sonic 1 starts from 80.

I played almost all Songs. They were all the Same. It was Green Hill Zone played too Fast, unless the Last one, FF, which played Green Hill Zone at low pitch, and goes slower and slower as it plays.

After it reached the lowest pitch the screen bugged up. Then I had to reset.

Went to the Level Select screen Again. Now, instead of Hydrocity and Don't Acess, it did show this level list:

Green Grooooooove Zone Marble Garden Zone Splash Hill Zone

Cyber City Zone Leaf Forest Zone Azure Lake Zone

Death Zone Death Zone Death Zone

Egg Zone Sound Test Dont Go here

I Was scared. Too much scared, I don't think I'd ever continue.

It was strange that it did show Sonic Advance, Sonic 3D, Sonic 3, and Sonic 4 Zones since they were released MUCH later.

And then I depared with 3 Death Zones. They all showed up Final Zone music, and next it did appear a photo showing my full name, my birthday and death date. I was really scared. I was crying, Why SEGA would do such thing? Then I decided to check out the Egg Zone. It was the only funny zone which was full of Wing Fortress' Chicken Badniks, and due to that, uncompletable, however there was a text saying: You are NEXT. - Dr. Eggman. After I returned to title screen, a realistic photo of Tails, with one of his Tails cut out, with blood spilled on the floor. Still, I kept going on. I "Tried" going to "Don't Go Here" which leaded me to the Special Stage.

It played normally until instead of a chaos Emerald... It showed a picture of my head, without eyes.

Instead of the "You got a Chaos Emerald!" Message it did show "You are Trapped. There's no way out" Still with the Chaos emerald chimes playing. After that the game crashed.

I deleted the "Beta" and never trusted the guy from the Private Messages anymore.
