Sonic CD: The Lost Level: R2

I'm an owner of a Sega CD. And one of my favorite, if not my favorite game for the system, no wait, add-on for the Sega Genesis is Sonic CD. And I should know. It's basically the only worthwhile game for the CD add-on. But a few days ago, I found out something peculiar. There was a lost level for Sonic CD.

The way I found out this level existed was because conveniently, I also have an interest in looking through the files of video games. And for Sonic CD, I found the remains of a level that for now, I'll simply refer to as R2. I looked at the files for the past version of this level, and it looked like some kind of medieval level. So I put the assets together, and then loaded up the game. But first, I had to beat Palmtree Panic.

When I got to the level, it was called "Gladiatorial Grudge". The present had the aesthetic of the broken down Colosseum in Rome, with a blue tint. I was playing the US version, so the music sounded like some mandolins and violins with a drum pattern and then it slowly became an atmospheric rock song. With mandolins and violins. One of the gimmicks I eyed later on during the level was riding brown boxes around to get to your next destination. I assumed that the brown boxes were to represent, horses? I don't think that horses were used for battle in the Colosseum. Anyways, I went through the two zones before going to Zone 3 of this level. But when I made it to the 3rd zone, well, that's where I'm supposed to write some scary stuff. So uh, here's the scary not scary stuff.

Zone 3 loaded up. But to my utter shock, it was in the bad future. I went "I thought I got both of the robot generators!" But as it turned out, I missed the one in Zone 2. The bad future version looked dystopian, crumbled, and there was "shudders" bloody bones and remains where the Colosseum used to stand. The stage was tinted this odd bluish color with some other hints of purple and red mixed in. The sky was colored a dark blood red. Now, when I made it to the boss, it was in the shape of a bow and arrow, with a small pod where Eggman/Robotnik was. The attack pattern was that Eggman would shoot one normal robotic arrow, and then shoot another arrow but spikes came out of it. And after every 6 arrows, he would release from the bow and charge towards Sonic 3 times in his pod. And despite my best efforts, I ended up losing to the boss. And that was also my last life, so I heard that classic US game over music. So I was wondering, why was this level scrapped? Was it because of the spooky bad future?

So I did some research, and there was actually some dark backstory behind this level. As it turns out, the level designer for this level actually based the bad future off of a nightmare he had about his love life. The bloody bones is what he saw as the remains of his wife in that nightmare, and the blood red sky was the weather when he saw all this. And the bow and arrow represented the fact that at some point, the bow could slash his relationship at any point. After these events, I took out the files for this level, and lived life normally again.

Boy, this was such a not scary story. Anyways, Mr. Mike T. McBaxter wrote this.
