Spared

The four friends drove along the otherwise empty highway through the forest, several months after what is exclusively known as the "Greenwood House Incident". They got out of the car at the point in the road nearest the house. Jeff, blond and pale; James, dark-haired and Hispanic; Rob, English with brown hair; and Eve, with short hair dyed green and multiple piercings.

"Man, I heard this place is creepy as hell!" Jeff went on. "My buddy said you can still see the blood stains and ev-"

"We get it, Jeff!" James interrupted. "Man, brother, you've been going on about how damned scary it is for the last five miles!"

Eve sighed. "Will you two morons just get on with walking in peace?"

Rob glared at the two. "She's right. Honestly, do you guys ever shut up?"

The two crossed their arms and carried on in silence.

Rob fingered his the hammer on his revolver nervously. "That reminds me. Were the two of you also too busy arguing to have the sense to bring a fucking gun?"

"Sure, shoot a ghost. It's a haunted house, man," Jeff said.

"Oh, please," James said in reply. "There's no such thing as-"

Eve clamped a hand over both their mouths. "Look. The stupid place is right over there, right?" She nodded toward a two-story house, standing alone in the distance.

The two nodded in reply, and Eve let them go and continued on. They reached the house without much more talk. They continued in without a word.

A few cigarette butts were scattered across the front room.

"What? The ghost died of lung cancer of some crap?" Eve commented sarcastically.

"Nah, the people here were murdered. Ripped apart. The cops said they took the bodies and left, refused to elaborate," Jeff said.

"Awful bigs words you're using."

"Yeah, looked that one up this morning."

Eve chuckled.

"G-guys..." James stammered from another room. "You'll wanna see this."

The others walked in. It was a bloody sight.

Cracked human bones were spread around the floor in a small pool of dried blood. A skull, one eye still intact, lay in the center. The eyeball slowly slipped down and fell out of the skull, tumbling across the bloodied tile.

Eve was at the back. "She's here..." she mumbled. She collapsed as they watched. A bloody slash marred her back.

Jeff panicked and ran, breathing heavily as he retreated out the back door. They heard his distance screams in ten seconds.

James stole the revolver from Rob's holster and retreated to a the outer corner of the room. He pulled the hammer back with his thumb and looked around nervously. "COME AT ME, YOU CRAZY BITCH!" he shouted. Rob watched as two burnt red, clawed hands burst from the very wall and began shredding James' skull as he screamed.

Rob tripped backwards and crawled frantically into the entry. He backed into the front door and turned to reach for the handle, but stopped as he heard soft footsteps echoing from the nearby hall. She turned out of the hall, strutting toward him, her burnt red flesh glistening in the dim light. Her red eyes seemed to look past his horrified expression, at something deeper... No not his soul. Just his features themselves. That's when he noticed the sad smile on her face. She continued walking along toward him until she was inches from his face.

"You look so much like him..."

It was so demented... He found her voice as angelic as any other. It felt so extremely wrong to have it coming from her... Was that a tear rolling down her cheek?

She kissed him once... Passionately, on the lips. Then she stood and left. Rob didn't know what to make of it...

When he got home, after an exhausting day of filing the police report of what he saw (though they insisted he needed mental help, the officers sent to the house confirmed the bodies, but no trace of the woman), he sat in the chair of the living room of his apartment. He looked out the window. She was there. Hanging from the sill of a sixth story window. He slowly walked into the bathroom and looked deep in the mirror. Blinking a few times to make sure he wasn't hallucinating, he looked even closer. His deep green eyes had turned blood red.
