Spongebob - You Are Not Alone

Around a few months ago, my PO box was leaked on twitter. I don't know how it happened or how they knew what it was, but regardless I was terrified. I didn't want people to know what my PO box was and send me stuff. I tried my best to get that tweet deleted, but no matter what I did, the original message stayed up for all to see. I think the original account who posted that has since been deleted, but I can't confirm that.

I was hoping no one would send me anything, but I was dead wrong. I was sent countless s*it I didn't even want. One of the things I got was a bracelet made of what looked like real human teeth covered in patches of dry blood, but that's a story for another day.

Though one of the things I received stood out in particular. It was a VHS tape placed in a small box that was poorly wrapped and was covered in what looked to be grease marks. The VHS itself was labeled, "SB-NotAlone.mp3." As you would expect I was fairly confused as to what the hell this was.

As weirded out as I felt, I popped it into my VHS player and proceeded to watch it. To my surprise, the theme song for Spongebob started playing. Spongebob was one of my favorite shows as a child, and still is now. I was excited to relive my childhood, so without hesitation, I continued to watch.

Although something I did notice about it was that the colors seemed distorted and it had a very dark tint to it. That did confuse me a bit but I just thought It had to do with the tape itself. After the intro ended, a title card appeared that read, "Help Wanted." I remember that as the very first episode of the show, and one that I hadn't watched in a while, so I was excited to see the episode again.

Though, just like in the intro, the quality was fairly poor. The whole thing was distorted, the screen was glitchy and bouncy, the colors were off, and the whole thing was just a mess. As the episode went on, it got worse and worse. The whole thing was so distorted that you could barely see or hear what was even going on. It was glitching and bouncing all over the place, and it seemed impossible to watch. Around ¾ into the episode, everything changed. The episode cut to static for a few seconds before cutting to black for a few more seconds.

After that a title card appeared that read, "You Are Not Alone," in red text on a black background. I was getting freaked out at this point. It stayed on this title card for a few seconds before cutting to what appeared to be Spongebob sitting in a dark room, and when I mean dark, I mean you can barely even see Spongebob himself. The colors seemed to be a bit more bold than usual. Spongebob himself didn't even appear to have a face. He just slouched down in his chair with the only bit of audio was what like a reverse version of the Spongebob theme song played quietly.

It stayed like this for an uncomfortably long amount of time until eventually after a few minutes, Spongebob straightened himself and stared at the camera and said in an uncomfortably low tone of voice, "Are you alone?"

I was legit worried for myself at that moment. What was I even watching at this point? After that moment, the whole thing went to s*it. The screen began to distort and bounce again, the audio became ear piercingly loud, and through the distorted bouncing mess of a screen, I saw Spongebob began to grow eyes that looked like a snakes eyes. I'm surprised I hadn't gone deaf at that point. It's almost as if they wanted me to continue watching it.

At some intervals it began to start flashing red with the words, "Are you alone," appearing on the screen at small intervals every now and then. I was just so confused at all of this. What person would have the audacity to make something like this and give it to me of all people? I shrugged all of these questions off for now and pressed on.

This whole flashy, distorted ordeal went on for a few minutes before everything came to a screeching halt. The screen became far less bouncy and distorted, the audio turned to the sound of faint static, and Spongebob's eyes turned to gaping white holes. He stared at the screen for a few more seconds or so before saying in a dark demonic voice, "You are not here alone.."

It lingered on this shot for a bit as Spongebob's face began to melt. His eyes rolled down his melting face like butter on a sauce pan and his flesh melted off his body, revealing a gruesome skeleton underneath.  After this it cut to static for a few seconds. After that it cut to a video clip that looked like it was recorded on a surveillance camera... my surveillance camera.

I recognized it at an instant. That was the street I lived on, my neighbors houses, my mailbox, everything being recorded from my camera. I watched as a man dressed in a run down, dirty Spongebob costume with gaping, black eyes walked up to my mailbox and shoved a small package inside it. The package looked identical to the one the tape came in. The Spongebob figure slammed the mailbox door shut and ran off. The tape ended with the normal end credits but without any music.

I was absolutely terrified at what I had just witnessed. It made absolutely no sense. This is exactly why I didn't want my PO Box leaked online, for fear that this could happen. As I was about to eject the tape, red text against a black background appeared on my screen that simply read, "Fear me."

I was absolutely done with this. I ejected the tape and placed it back in the box before storing it away in my closet. I wasn't gonna be subjected to this torture any longer.

It's been some time since this whole incident, and I still have nightmares about it. I don't know who sent me the tape, or why they did it, or why the f*ck they were dressed up in a Spongebob outfit when they did it. I still refuse to look back at that tape again, and I'm only coming out about this now to tell people to keep their personal information safe. Take this as a lesson.
