The Backstory

Do you remember watching episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants? The ones that were put on Nickelodeon? Well, I heard that there was one episode that never aired.

Back in 2007, I was an intern at Nickelodeon Studios. We were all in the editing room, making SpongeBob episodes. We were interuppted by Vincent Waller, the creator director, opening the door quickly. He told us to stop what we're doing. He put his laptop down on his bench and said to us, that there was a disturbing SpongeBob episode on his laptop.

After he said that, he opened the laptop and he played the episode.

The episode isn't special. It was just an uninteruppted loop of Squidward Tentacles slowly walking, passing clouds, shaped like flowers in the sky for two or three minutes before fading out to white.

Unlike the cool songs put in, though this song on this episode was not a song at all. It was just children singing in reverse for a minute and a half before cutting to a white noise throughout the film.

Squidward wasn't even smiling, or doing anything, he was just walking, with a sad look on his face.

After the episode ends, we believed that it cut to white and that was it, before we left the room.

When Vincent was reviewing the episode, he said it was too junk to be put in a complete series, due to the fact that the episode was created by Stephen Hillenburg.

He emailed Stephen for a digital copy of the episode, and for five minutes later, Stephen replied to him with a download link of it.

Once Vincent downloaded the digital copy on his laptop, he noticed something...

The episode was 9 minutes and 6 seconds long.

This is what he emailed to all of us:

"After it faded out to white, it stayed the same until the 6th minute, before going back to Squidward, slowly walking again. A sound was playing in the background softly. It wasn't even shouting, or whimpering... more like a deep voice crying. As the crying got more painful, the screen started to twist.

The sad face of Squidward turned into an evil smile.
