Uncanny
Humans have an uncanny valley. The basic idea of an uncanny valley is that if you see something that looks human, like a wax sculpture or a hyper realistic droid in a movie , something in your brain says “that thing is not human” and triggers your fight or flight response. This implies that sometime in humanity's past, there was something that looked human, but wasn't. I don't have time to look it up, but the word Doppelganger has been around for a long time, centuries maybe. The final point in this…preamble, I guess you'd call it, is that the idea of an entity or demon or something that can mimic voices, or pose as a human has been around since the dawn of humanity. Countless stories from every religion have been written, about something, using something else familiar to lure someone to danger or, rarely, safety.
Okay. I think that's enough to start telling you what's happening.
11 years to this day, my brother went on a highly classified expedition to the American southwest. He sent regular emails, mostly about the forests and similar things. The last email I ever got from home had only 3 words.
“DON'T TRUST ME.”
I think I finally understand what he meant by that. “Don't trust anyone who looks, or sounds like me.”
1 day ago, I got a phone call from an unknown number. It sounded like my brother. I didn't say anything. He said he would explain everything. Then he said he was at my door.
My doorbell rang.
In my skittish nature, I threw the smartphone across the room, shattering it.
He kept ringing the doorbell.
Why am I even telling you all this? Why didn't I open the door for him?
You see, I watched my brother's dead body get buried, 10 years ago.
