Wonderful Meat

It had all started the day I walked into my favorite butcher shop that is a block away from my home, to purchase some finely sliced meat for a barbecue. Being a regular customer at the butcher shop, I had made a few friends. Sometimes I would even get discounts on the purchases I made. I walked inside and I realized that my one of my friends, Ron, was no longer there. I had known Ron for about three months. I stood waiting at the cash register longing for a conversation, which me and Ron would usually have while I was waiting. I went up and paid for the meat. I then began to make my way home. It was a nice sunny day so I decided to walk.

As I was walking home I looked at the meat I was carrying... wondering why it tastes so good. It's so good you may even think that it was made from human flesh. I shook the feeling knowing I was being paranoid. I got home and prepared the meat for the barbecue. Several weeks later I began to crave some more meat. So I walked down to the butcher shop once more. This time not only Ron was missing but so was Jennifer. She was a cute girl whom I had grown very fond of. I asked one of the butchers what had happened to Ron and Jennifer, to which I got a very unnerving response. The butcher's eyes darted back and forth and it was as if he was growing nervous. I eyed him suspiciously, he then stated that Ron and Jennifer had grown bored of working here and that they decided to find another job. That was strange because they had both told me how much they loved to work at the butcher shop, meeting lots of wonderful people and seeing them smile from the wonderful service they provided. As I waited at the cash register once more I thought about Ron and Jennifer. I paid for the meat and I walked home.

Later, I remembered having gotten their cell phone and house phone numbers, so I decided to give them a call. I whipped out my cell phone and I dialed Ron's number first. I tried his cell phone and I got no response. Then I tried his house phone and got no response either. Then I attempted to call Jennifer, I called both cell phone and house phone, but I got no response. I thought for a very long time, wondering what had happened to them, and I remembered the strange response I got from the butcher when I had asked him what happened to Ron and Jennifer. I dismissed it and proceeded making my way home. Once I had gotten home I couldn't shake the feeling of the butcher's strange response and my friends' disappearance. I couldn't fully enjoy the thin slice of meat I was having for dinner.

Then came the day when I went to the butcher shop looking for my friends. Inside I called Ron's cell phone number, hoping he'd pick up. I then heard Ron's ringtone within the butcher shop. I frantically looked around for him, but I found that the ringtone was coming from over the counter. Where the butcher chops up the meat. I then found him walking out from the backroom where all the meat is stored. I asked what Ron's cell phone was doing sitting on a table. The butcher said that the cell phone belonged to him. I had countered his argument stating that the cell phone sitting on the table was clearly Ron's cell phone. I knew what it looked like from the day he bought it, excitedly showing me his brand new cell phone. I eyed the butcher and left the shop without buying any meat.

It had been over a few months since my friends' disappearance. Then one day while flipping through the channels I found the local news channel and there was a report of a butcher convicted of murdering a man and a woman at a nearby butcher shop. The report stated that the butcher had tried to murder a customer that entered the shop, the customer ran out and desperately called for help, as to which a nearby police officer heard the customer's plea and arrested the butcher, attempting to cover up the murder, the butcher decided to turn the man and woman into freshly cut meat and put it up for sale. Chills ran down my spine when a photo of the butcher showed up on my television screen. I stared at it for a good while knowing that it was the same butcher from the butcher shop where I regularly buy meat. I knew he was trying to hide something. But most importantly, I knew the man and woman he had murdered was Ron and Jennifer. I cried for many days mourning the death of my friends. The meat I had purchased and eaten may or may not have contained traces of human flesh, I ignored the possibility. I always wanted to ask Jennifer out on a date. However due to these unfortunate events, I never got the chance...
