Devil May Cry 4 Update 22.5.17

Author's note: This is a fictional creepypasta I wrote. Enjoy!

I wanted to get ready for the new reboot of Devil May Cry.  So I figured I'd pop in Devil May Cry 4 and play it.  It was even more of a reason, because I'd had to restart the game since I lost a lot of my save data.  Playing it again could also serve as a final farewell to the original series.   When I booted the game up everything seemed normal.  One strange thing that happened was that it said there was an update available for this game.

As normal as that usually is, the update number was strange.  It said "Version 22.5.17".  What kind of game has THAT many updates?  I figured maybe the game had a bunch of tiny updates, and me not playing it for a couple years could have something to do with it.  The game updated and the game started as usual.  I went to new game and it asked what character I wanted to play as.

Nero or...Vergil?  I was confused but also ecstatic.  One thing that bugged me about Devil May Cry 4, was the lack of unlockables, and I thought it would be a nice treat to play as my favorite character from Devil May Cry despite him being gone from the story.  The cutscene that followed seemed to be what happened right after the ending of DMC4 with Dante, Trish, and Lady leaving Devil Never Cry for a mission.  They arrive at a blue cave like area and the chapter starts. The first chapter is simply called "Rise", and there was no option to  upgrade or anything.

The picture seems to be of the back of Vergil.  For some reason you start as Trish in this new area.  While I'm even more confused, playing as Trish is fine to.  There is no tutorial for how to play as her, simply just black and yellow words that come up and say, "Go....".   Trish plays just like she does in DMC2, except she can shoot lighting bolts and lay traps like she is in Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

I was really happy about this, but at the same time disappointed and weirded out that the pause and option menus was just a basic pause screen that just said, "pause", with no movelist or other weapons.  She is in a dark cave with a blue light throughout it.  There is no music playing at all, with no other sound effect or ambiance.  It was a bit strange.   The enemies seem to be hybrids of the marionettes from DMC1, the Agonifinis from DMC2, the Hell Prides from DMC3, and of course the Scarecrows from DMC4.  I couldn't help but laugh at them, but god they were weird looking.  A voice is heard that says "Disgusting" that sounds eerily like Vergil and like something he would say.

As you get closer you will hear him then say "That face...".  Something strange that I should mention is that the voices are in Japanese.  DMC is never in Japanese; fortunately it does have English subtitles though.  A cutscene then plays of Trish encountering a blue ghost like figure that resembles Vergil.  He looks practically like he does out of DMC3 except obviously with better graphics, and along with being a transparent blue ghost, he has no eyes.  Trish has to fight him.  Every time you attack him, he teleports away and then does his quick slash move that does massive damage.  It's an unwinable fight and after that, a cutscene plays where Vergil grabs Trish, and says,

Vergil-That face...

Trish realizes she can't win, and tries to run away to get Dante and Lady.  But before she can escape, Vergil impales her with his sword at lightning speeds.  Trish falls to the ground, and Vergil gently but fastly slices through the front part of her head with her face, and the sliced part then falls to the ground in a bloody mess  (I guess he REALLY didn't wanna see her face again.  It seemed like a twisted reference to what Vergil says to Trish in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3).  The blood that flows out of her, then seemed to seep into Vergil, and as it goes into him he becomes more of a solid being again.  He then looks like the Corrupt Vergil outfit from DMC3, but his face is a bit more skeletal.  "More...I need MORE!" he says.  I felt terrible about Trish dying, and disturbed that she died in a very graphic way, even for Devil May Cry.

I then resumed control of Corrupt Vergil.  It was nice to actually be able to resume control over Vergil, but was hoping it wouldn't be like this.  The next chapter is then called "Real Demon".  There is no picture.  Once again there is no power up or anything.  The game doesn't give a tutorial on how to play as Corrupt Vergil either.

He plays like a powered up version of how he played in DMC3, like the last battle with him in that game.  All it says in black and blue letters is "Kill....".  The music is an ominous and unsettling gothic sounding theme, similar to the style of the music of DMC1 a bit before Dante enters hell.  The enemies are once again all hybrids of other enemies.  Vergil then exits the cave, and sees a dark gloomy castle.  A cutscene plays with him saying,

"This is where it will all end."

I notice that the castle looks a lot like the castle in the original teaser trailer for Devil May Cry 4, which could also be the castle in certain parts of the final Devil May Cry 4.  I fought through the castle, and it's quite easy with how overpowered Vergil is.  There were really no puzzles or platforming, it was very straightforward.  The castle also has very disturbing portraits.  Skeletons, tortures, disfigured bodies, inhuman creatures with frightening eyes.  Nothing like the normal fancy looking portraits in past games.

The environment would start alternating, reminiscent of how it works in the new DmC, but more abstract.  Walls would become the ceiling, the pictures would become enemies, and the screen would sometimes have a ripple like effect.  I was too frozen and determined to check if this happened to anyone else on the Internet.  When you reach the top of the castle a cutscene plays where Vergil looks in the mirror and sees Nelo Angelo (Corrupt Vergil's Devil Trigger, and how he was in the first DMC) as his reflection but he's far more scary and sinister looking with a demonic grin, and torn looking bat wings.  He then starts laughing maniacally, very out of character for Vergil.  Dante and Lady burst through the door.

Dante-"Vergil!"

Vergil-"Brother...."

Dante-"What the hell did you do to Trish?"

Vergil-"No one else deserves to wear mother's face!  It was a fitting end for her.  And I needed her,  to abandon my pathetic  human half and become full fledged demon!

Lady-"He's completely lost it!"

Vergil-"You're useless to me..."

Vergil then quickly teleports behind Lady and slits her neck, to the point where her head slowly slid off her shoulders.

Dante-"No!  This can't be happening!"

Vergil-"You wish to see them brother?  Then let my blade tear your skull"

Not only was I horrified to see Lady go down like that, but all of this seemed so strange and out of character for all of them.  It just didn't feel like Devil May Cry.  A battle ensues with Dante; the music is a g-major like tone that sounded like something out of a nightmare.

Dante was pretty easy to fight with the overpowered Vergil; he fights just like he does in the battle with Nero against him.  As I got his health down lower, he started to really struggle.  He was writhing in pain, something you really don't see Dante do.  Though he did enter Devil Trigger, it really wasn't much harder.

After the fight ends, Dante let's a violent scream and Falls to the ground.

Dante-"Vergil...please stop this"

Vergil-"Just a bit more...once I devour you, I will be near unstoppable!"

Vergil draws his sword swiftly, making many slices at poor Dante in his typical fast quick draw style.  His body then just falls pieces.  The blood from Dante goes towards Vergil and seeps into him as it did with Trish.  He then transforms into the frightening Nelo Angelo figure he saw in the mirror.  He laughs maniacally and the chapter ends.  I couldn't believe what just happened.  Though from what little sense I was getting from this, it is that Vergil is trying to get the blood of people who were at least part demon to become a full demon instead of just half.

The next chapter is named "End".  It just shows a picture of the new Nelo Angelo.

A cutscene played of Nero and Kryie.  They are walking by the castle the previous events transpired.

Kryie-Nero, I have a really bad feeling.  Like something terrible is happening right now.

Nero-What do you me-

Before Nero can even finish his sentence, Kyrie is impaled with a phantom sword from Neo Nelo Angelo.  She falls to the ground, dead and bleeding.  It made me jump, despite not caring about Kryie as much as the other three.

Nero-No...Kryie!

Neo Nelo Angelo let out a demonic laugh.

Nero-What the hell are you?!

Neo Nelo Angelo-Thank you Nero...you freed me.

Nero-What the hell are you...wait.  My arm!  Are you what was in my arm?"

Vergil teleports right next to him and says

Neo Nelo Angelo-You could say that.

Nero jumps out of the way.

Neo Nelo Angelo-You are all I need.  You have the blood of Sparda, the last bit I need!

Neo Nelo Angelo than starts contorting in strange ways, and starts mutating.  Similarly to how Arkham mutated near the end of DMC3, but this time the creature was blue, spouting blood, with tentacles and blades, but the real disturbing part was that it seemed to have faces of both Trish and Dante, writhing and screaming in deep demonic screams.  It also had a face of Neo Nelo Angelo in the middle. Nero was disturbed and angered, as was I.

The fight started, and now I was controlling Nero.  He had all that he had at the end of DMC4, though he couldn't devil trigger, probably because Vergil was part of his devil trigger and he was now free.  The creature vomited a strange blue and red like substance at Nero, and would send out clones of Neo Nelo Angelo.

The fight was surprisingly easy, and Nero could actually use the devil bringer abilities against the abomination.  There was also no music playing, just eerie sounds and screams.  Despite the easy fight, when I got the boss down to practically one bit of health, the creature used an attack where the tentacles practically covered the screen and grabbed Nero and strangled him draining all of his health.  A cutscene then played, where the creature drained Nero, and not just of his health but of his entire being to the point where he was practically a zombiefied husk.

He then turned back into the regular Neo Nelo Angelo but even more terrifying before, with faces on him that slightly resembled Dante in devil trigger, Trish, and now Nero on his chest and shoulders.  The screen went to a close up of the creature's face, and he said in an even more demonic version of Vergil's voice but for some reason in English this time,  "I have it!  The world will now know true power and despair."  The screen then faded to black and in white letters it said, "The Devil will never cry again".  The PS3 was frozen on the image, and all I could do was exit to the home menu.

I was mentally and emotionally drained.  I needed to take a nap.  When I woke up I instantly went on the Internet to see if anyone else got this bizarre unlock from the update.  It then had occurred to me that the numbers in the update could've been applied to numbers of the alphabet.  V was the 22nd letter in the alphabet, with E as the 5th, and R as the 17th.

This means it could've stood for VER, which is the first three letters of Vergil.  No one else believed me about this update, and asked for footage.  I asked a friend to come over so I wouldn't have to deal with it alone again, and was ready to take footage.  But when I started the game, there was no option to pick Vergil.

What the hell was all of this?  Was this some bizarre way of Capcom giving a full end to the current DMC saga?  Ironically I'm one of the people more supportive of the reboot.  All I knew was that was beyond a strange occurrence, and I hope I would never have to deal with something like this again.
