Final Fantasy 0

One game series I can always enjoy, and one of the best I grew up with, is Final Fantasy. To me, the games are total masterpieces... but I never got to play the first six on their original systems.

Sure I had Final Fantasy 1 and 6 on Virtual Console, 1, 2, and 4 on PSP, 5 and 6 on GBA, and 3 on DS, but I never got to play the originals... until that fateful day.

I went to Game Haven to get some new games for my Playstation 3, and when I went up to the counter to check them out... the guy at the counter said that I had won an NES complete with whatever two games I wanted. I chose Super Mario Bros. 3... and the original Final Fantasy.

I was so excited to play the original game of my favorite series, I ran home right away, set the NES up, and put Final Fantasy right in (I should also mention that it came with two controllers). A feeling of great joy rushed through my body... I was ready for awesomeness.

When I started the game up, everything seemed normal. I noticed that the Continue option was actually selectable, so that's what I went with, to see what the previous person did. He had a Knight, Ninja, White Wizard, and Black Wizard. In order of their classes, their names were DARK, DEAD, HELP, and EVIL. I decided to ignore it, thinking they were just masochist or something.

What I did notice was their setup. Each one only had one weapon and a shield, and they each only had one Magic spell. DARK had an Xcalibur with a Diamond Shield and CUR2. DEAD had a Katana with a Leather Shield and FAST. HELP had a Zeus Hammer with a Protect Ring and HEL3. EVIL had a Catclaw with another Protect Cape and NUKE.

I thought this was a bit weird, especially since they were all at Level 99. I thought to myself "Wow, this person must've been hardcore or taking a really hardcore challenge." I also noticed that he was right before Chaos... so I went in.

Everything worked as normal in the final boss, and I eventually won, pretty easily at that, but... the ending wouldn't come up. Instead, I was in another temple-like area, and now my team's names were different. MUST, TURN, BACK, and NOW!. I was a little worried now, and moved forward with them, as that was all I could do.

Eventually I reached a split path with 4 different hallways. A sudden fade to black, and I was back in the area, with all but 1 hallway blocked off. And now i only had the Knight, whose name was WHY?.

It was by this time that I had concluded that this was a hacked game, which kinda made me sad, but after my curiosity ended I could just start a new file, so I went on down. It eventually led me to what I know is Melmond, however... everyone I talked to started a battle scene.

I figured this was part of the hack, that all the citizens had been turned into monsters, so I went along for the ride... but after killing everyone, a text box appeared saying:

"Finally, they're all dead..."

Then it cut to the other three warriors, who had murdered the towns of Crescent Lake, Onrac, and Gaia. Then a chant appeared on screen. "Come forward, destruction of light.... end it all, and feast tonight."

It faded to black, and now I had all four back, with the names WHAT, HAVE, WE, and DONE. I was in a totally black area, just walking around. I also noticed I had no equipment, but a hell of a lotta magic. As I walked around, it came to my attention that this room had the layout of the 10th floor of Pandaemonium in Final Fantasy II. I proceeded to the center-north area, and there was a little clear ball there.

I touched it, and was suddenly engaged in battle with... Chronodia's 5th form? I sat there and thought to myself.

"Wow, he actually put Chronodia in this game."

I quickly looked up Chronodia's 5th form, and tried to fight her the best I can... though she eventually beat me, and as it faded to black, my character sprites seemed to rot.

Now I was in a long hallway that was like Bahamut's chamber, but totally red and with fire and both sides. I checked the characters... and they were all bloody corpses, without magic OR equipment, and their names were RIP, WERE, IN, and HELL.

I walked forward for what seemed to go on for an eternity, and when I finally got to the end... I realized something. My characters are now in hell. Talking to the demons, I learned that the main heroes had been possessed by the Four Fiends after Chaos's defeat, had been made into hallucinating that all the townspeople were monsters, and therefore killing them.

The chant they did summoned Chronodia to end the world, and when they finally came to their senses and tried to stop her. Chronodia had cursed them and sent them to hell. I didn't know what to do next, so I went to speak to the main guy. He said the following:

"Jack, how could you?"

But.. none of my characters were named Jack. That was my name.

"You have brought disgrace to all and have sent these innocent souls to their death.... I place a curse on you for all eternity."

Not wanting to hear anymore, I immediately turned off the game and returned the copy of Final Fantasy, telling them to burn it. I played Mario 3 afterward and it was great and all... but to this day I still can't get that Final Fantasy hack out of my mind. It just... how did it know my name?
