Nobody Is Home

"Mom?" I called, stepping into my childhood home for the first time in years.

It was an average sized house, a sad little gray thing. It didn't have a big backyard, but it was big enough to play tag or hide and seek there. The hallway into the house was white and had a large picture of me, my sister, my mom and my dad.

My dad had passed away a week ago.

I heard mom weeping in the kitchen. She had been very depressed lately, but then again who wouldn't be? I didn't think anything of it, and went to comfort her. The kitchen was painted yellow, and the paint's age was really beginning to show. It was as though it had given up on life just as dad had done. Mom was sobbing in dad's seat, you know, where he would normally sit in when we ate.

"Don't worry mom, it'll be okay." I said to her. I sat and put my arm around her, giving a smile that I hope looked encouraging.

"Yeah...yeah I know, mommy just is very sad about your dad." She replied. Mom hadn't realized that I wasn't six anymore, I was 27, but I didn't comment on it.

I hate to admit it, but my father's death really hadn't affected me too badly. We had never been particularly close, so when I heard the news the extent of my reaction was to fix myself a stiff drink and get on with my evening. His name was Marshall by the way. My mom's was Ashley, my sister's name was Lily and my name is Craig. I looked at the clock at and realized it was almost 8:00am.

"Wow! Time flies, I have to go to work now." I said, standing and straightening my tie a little.

"Yeah...okay." She sobbed and tried to put on a smile. Then I went to my car, and drove off to work.

I'm a marine biologist, I've wanted to be one since high school. Anyway, at work my boss said to me that I could just go home, family crisis and stuff like that. I thanked him for the day off and headed back to mom's place. I parked in the driveway, noticing my mother's car wasn't there and started walking to the pitifully unkept house. With a quick glance in the window I concluded that she must be out grocery shopping or something, as there were no lights on either. I decided to check the house anyway.

I knocked on the door and tried to open it. Naturally, it was locked. I checked the window and knocked lightly on it, and of course received no answer. I then remembered that mom always keeps a spare house key behind the garage in a box. I retrieved it and went back to go inside.

I called out again. "Mom? Are you here?" Nobody called back, but I heard something.

At first I didn't recognize it, but then I started to pick up in the sound. It was like some sort of sobbing. Not mom's regular sobbing, but I figured she was crying in the kitchen again. I wondered why no lights were on, so I flipped the switch in the entrance way. The house quickly lit up (Most of the lights in our house were controlled by that one big switch). I walked into the kitchen, but no one was there. I walked into the living room and checked it, no one was there. The sobbing sound seemed to come from upstairs.

I quickly ran up the stairs and checked my room first. I don't know why though. Not surprisingly there was no one there. I went into mom's and dad's bedroom, but to my surprise there was no one there either. Now the sobbing noise stopped. I had chills up my spine, but shook it off. Now I heard sounds coming from downstairs... But this time... It wasn't sobbing... It... It was crying...

I rushed down the stairs and checked the kitchen. Nobody was there, I checked the living room... And nobody was there. I heard it upstairs now and now it was downright screaming. I ran out and checked the window, too terrified to go up.

Now all the lights were gone again.

I went to the door... And it was locked. I checked the box behind the garage and... There were the keys... I opened the door just to hear the same screaming.

This time it was from the kitchen. I slowly began walking there, while walking I turned on all the lights again. I then checked the kitchen and there she was. Mom.

She then looked at me with a godawful look and said: "Nobody is home!"

She then attacked me. I ran out of the house. Then the door slammed shut behind me and I heard it lock. I tried opening the door. And well it was locked... I checked the box behind the garage. To my big surprise the keys were there... I tried to open the door and... It unlocked. I slowly began walking towards the kitchen not switching the lights on this time. I still heard the screaming. I went into the kitchen.

I then jumped slightly when mom screamed: "Nobody is home for fucks sake!!!"

She then attacked me again, I tried to run for the door but this time she catched me and tackled me onto the stone tiled floor. She then began kicking, punching, slapping, biting and banging my head onto the floor. While screaming: "Nobody is home!! Nobody is home!! Nobody us home!!"

I was bleeding and I was half dead when she stopped screaming and said to me while smiling and laughing the most demonic was.

"Nobody is home!"
