Temple Run: The Never-Ending Torture

Gosh, why did I have to play Temple Run that day? I just had to clear my mind of boredom. Well, since your reading this, you might as well know what happened.

It happened last week. I heard Temple Run 2 had come out, and I was excited. Unfortunately, I also learned that it had been out for months now. I couldn't hold my excitement, so once I had escaped from the torture of Social Studies class, I pulled out my Nokia Lumia, made sure no teachers were around, connected to my school's coincidental wi-fi, and downloaded Temple Run 2. I was about to play it when the bell rang.

I was late for Language Arts! I didn't have time to play it, so I turned off my phone, and ran down the hallway. Oddly enough, I had to come to an immediate stop, because I found I couldn't slow down. I got myself slowed down, and figured it was an adrenaline rush. I got into Language Arts, and my teacher handed me a D-Hall. But that wasn't even close to the bad luck I was going to have today.

After school, I leaped on the couch, and pulled out my phone. My mom asked me if I had homework, but I just said, "Sure!" and got started on Temple Run 2.

The game was everything my friends had described. I could ride ziplines, ride minecarts, avoid new obstacles, etc. But I found one thing odd though. Guy Dangerous seemed to be panting a lot by the time I reached 1,300,000 points. I thought it was something they added to the game, so I kept playing. Eventually, I accidentally pushed poor Guy against the wall, and the giant demon monkey caught him. My score was 6,354,701. I figured I'd play it later, so I started texting my friend Barri. Here's how our conversation went.

Me: Sup :P

Barri: Hey :/

Barri: Nothin, whats happenin with u?

Me: Just got a really high score on Temple Run 2

Barri: Kewl :3

Me: Gosh, Guy's panting is annoying, whyd they have to throw that in?

Barri: What do you mean?

Me: He pants really loud.

Barri: Dude he doesn't pant

Barri: None of the characters do

Me: Yeah right

Barri: Dude go to gamestop and ask them to take a look at it

Me: :P

My mom walked into the room, and told me to do my homework, or she would take my 3DS XL away for a week. Dangit! I was so close to the final stage in Paper Mario: Sticker Star! I couldn't let texting stop me from beating it! So I said goodbye to Barri, but he left me one message.

Barri: Do u wonder what it would feel like to be the ppl in Temple Run?

I didn't think much of it. So I started working on my homework, and once I was done, I decided to play Temple Run again. This time, when I played, I made an awkward jump on a break in the road, and Guy turned around and ran in my direction, but the scene kept moving the same way as usual. His panting got even louder, and I became so frustrated, I gave him the most gruesome death possible. I had him get close to the demon monkey, and I had him get hit by the spike wheel that is in the forest part of the game. But when he got hit though, instead of just lying down dead, he screamed.

The monkey stopped and danced while he screamed. Eventually, he stopped screaming, and the monkey picked him up. He was missing a foot, and I saw red on the right of his lower chest. The monkey started toying with him, and slowly pulled him apart. He was very red, and just at that moment, the monkey threw him in its mouth. I heard the gruesome crunching of bones, and the monkey apparently swallowed him. It then walked off screen, and I got the game over screen. When it showed his death drawing, it showed him lying down, with his eyes shadowed. He looked tired, and his mouth was slightly open. The place where a usually funny line that was related to how you died was replaced with a grim message, "Our lives are in your control. Will we run, or will we die?"

I panicked. This had to be a dream. I pinched myself all over. Oh gosh, this was really happening. I thought maybe I had just gotten a hacked version of Temple Run, and that this was meant to scare me. I checked the app store. There was only one Temple Run 2. I got myself calm and collected, and I decided to play the game one more time.

I started the game, but no music played, except for the blowing of wind. The course was like a forest in autumn. It was a little creepy, and the path went into a tunnel. I sucked it up, and started the game. My character ran into the tunnel, and everything went black. When the course was finally visible again, Guy stopped right in front of three bodies, hung by ropes. They were Scarlet Fox, Barry Bones, and Karma Lee. He turned around to look at me, and said, "You've killed us all. No matter what, we must endure the pain of each death, knowing we will never be free. You kill us for fun, and laugh." The ropes lowered the bodies to the floor, then let go of them. The bodies then got up, and looked at me with there pale white eyes, no pupils. They all started chanting, "We must run, never stop. No escape, never escape. Never, never, never, never." And they all started running into the darkness of the cave.

I turned it off, and I immediately deleted Temple Run 2. This wasn't a fun game. This entire time, I had been so naive to just play the game without considering what they had felt. They were tired. I had forced them to run, and no matter how exhausted they were, they had to keep running. There is no end to the temple. They will never escape, and each time they try, they keep enduring the suffering of exhaustion, to the point where they die from one of the obstacles. I thought about what they said. "No escape, never escape." They will always suffer as long as this game exists.

And so I went for a jog to forget about it. But then, I started running a little faster....
