The Cave of Bad Dreams

Last year my brother gave me his Nintendo 64 and all his games to it. He had 3 boxes full of games, and I was more than happy for it. He even had duplicates of some of them, like 2 Ocarina of Time cartridges. All of the games didn't work though, which is too bad, since it's very hard to find Nintendo 64 games in stores nowadays.

After playing a few days I decided to search for "Rayman 2: The Great Escape" in one of the boxes. I knew he had the game, since we used to play it years ago. After looking a while I finally found it. The cartridge was in bad shape and it didn't work when I put it in the N64. When I told my brother about the broken cartridge he told me to go outside and bury it under the ground. I understood why because the game meant so much to him. It was the game that brought back so many childhood memories.

The following day I went for a walk when I saw a flea market on the edge of the road. There were some teenagers running the store. They didn't even pay attention to the customers. They usually ignored all the questions. I looked around a bit. There was a whole lot of weird stuff, like a broken skateboard, and an iPod that I'm pretty sure didn't work.

I saw a plastic bag and decided to look in it. It was full of empty game covers and broken discs. I looked a bit more, since I thought I'd find what I looked for, and I did. It was a Nintendo 64 cartridge with "Rayman 2 N64" written in red marker on it. I decided to buy it, even though I knew these kind of games aren't trusty. There was a ticket on it: "(Just take it, I don't want it.)". I looked at the guy running the store, and he said: "Take it, it's free!". OK...

I plugged the game in as soon as I arrived at home. It was a little buggy, and the title screen had scrambled graphics, but I could look past that since I knew old games usually behaved like this. The music would randomly stop or change track in-game. NPCs would also say things they aren't supposed to say, which I thought was pretty funny. But every time I got to The Menhir Hills the game crashed. I thought I could fix this by going to The Cave of Bad Dreams and get the elixir you are supposed to give to Clark.

I went to The Marshes of Awakening and searched for the place, since I knew where the place was. I used to be scared as a kid, and that brought back some bad memories.

When I got there the guard to the cave would say what he usually did if the player didn't know the name of the place, which was something like: "I will only grant access to those who know the name of this place."

So I left the place. However I couldn't because something blocked me, like an invisible wall or something. I thought that it was just a glitch and tried to talk to the guard again. This time he would let me in for some reason.

I was spawned to the place he usually spawns you, except there were no music. The acid underneath wasn't animating, and when I fell in it, nothing happened at all. I could walk in the acid. This helped me advance the level, since no platforms would work. Rayman was the only object. Not a single enemy, no lums. I couldn't pause the game either, which means I couldn't exit the stage unless I reset the console, but I'm no quitter.

Textures started disappearing, and as I thought it couldn't get more weird, some music started playing. But it wasn't the song for this stage. It comes much later in the game. It was The Tomb of the Ancients theme. This started to get really creepy. Rayman started to do weird stuff like his head started spinning vertically. I couldn't control Rayman at all. He would just stand there.

After a while I could finally control Rayman. However, the controls seemed delayed. I managed to get to the place where the guard chases you, except that he didn't chase me this time. I then finally arrived at the end of the slide when you usually get to fight him, except no one was there either. When you fight the guard here he usually creates floating blocks for you to jump on top on. But because he wasn't there I couldn't advance. After five minutes of nothing the game started to randomly create solid glitch blocks I could stand on. I took advantage of this to get past the huge pits in my way.

When all that was over I arrived at the end of the stage. The room was full of gold and diamonds, and everything like usual. The guard appeared, and he said what he usually does. When he said:

"Take whatever you want."

I had an option of keeping the gold for myself or not, but it wouldn't let me choose the second option, so I chose to keep it. Rayman flipped the coin in the air like he normally does, except he was warped to the fairy glade.

Everything was on fire and no music was playing, only the sound effects of the fire. Dead Baby Globox could be seen everywhere. Uglette could be seen crying in the background. I walked next to her, and she said:

"My babies...why didn't you save them?"

I noticed some Baby Globox wasn't dead. "Why?" was all they said when I walked next to them, and so did every other NPC.

The screen faded to white once again, this time taking me to The Tomb of the Ancients. Rayman was transparent, like if he was a ghost. No enemies or lums. I walked through the stage and saw Globox and Ly lying on the ground. They didn't say a word. I saw the guard in the background, and he said: "Theres nothing you can do now, Rayman. This is your fault.".

The screen faded to white one last time just to show Rayman lying on a small island at nighttime. Blood was spilled everywhere, and the sea turned more and more red followed by the text: "THE END".

When my brother entered the room he was terrified. He took the cartridge, smashed it with a hammer and threw it away for good. Since then I promised I would never buy (or take in this case) a game, a movie or anything from a flea market ever again.
