The Super Mario Bros. Super Show Incident
The year was 1989. I was around 8 years old at the time. I was always watching cartoons, mostly on Saturday mornings, or, very rarely, in the afternoons after I got home from school. On September 5th, 1989, I was watching some toons on Channel 43 before school, when I caught a commercial. It advertised a show that was based off of the games I played on my NES. It was called, "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show" and it showed famous actor Captain Lou Albano as the Italian plumber himself.
In the commercial, he said, "Holy cannoli, kids! I'm Mario, and I'm tellin' 'ya. If you're not watching The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, you're gonna turn into a Goomba!" At first, I felt confused. Why would he say something like that to a child? As the commercial went on, it advertised some of the characters, while promising, "The Wildest Weekday Fun in the Universe!" Near the end of the commercial, it stated that the show would air on weekday afternoons at 4:00, during Channel 43's Kidsland programming block.
After watching the commercial, my mom helped me pack up for school. As I rode the bus to school, I saw blocks and Toads everywhere I went, although I thought it was a hallucination. Meanwhile, as I was in Math class, I saw Luigi and Mario banging on the windows, telling me to remember 4:00. I slowly got onto the bus back home, and I saw tons of images of the number 4, as if they were telling me to remember it. I came back home at about 3:45. But my consciousness, felt different. It moved my body towards the TV, as if I felt possessed. I slowly grabbed the remote from the table, and turned on the TV. I constantly flipped through channels, until I found it. Channel 43. However, my mind was opposing my consciousness. I didn't want to watch Channel 43. As I had a bad day from school, I lay down on my bed, thinking about what I should do that weekend. However, I looked at my alarm. 4:00 PM, it said.
I then soon realized why I saw all those Mario characters and the number 4 everywhere I went. But then, my body felt off. I heard Captain Lou Albano's voice, as he kept saying, "You're gonna turn into a Goomba!" over and over again, getting slower and more unsettling each time. I had missed "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show." Slowly, but surely, my body changed. My legs were nonexistent, and were replaced with large brown feet. My mouth started gaining an almost permanent frown, with two large fangs. My eyes became quite large, and I had large, angry eyebrows. My hands? Completely gone. And my body was now a brown blob with a tan body. I had turned into a Goomba. Over the years, I had talked to several doctors about this incident, and so far, they have said there is no antidote or vaccine. So, until a vaccine or antidote is made, I'm stuck as a Goomba, forever...
