The Figure in the Long Black Coat

It was cold. The winter air brushed past me as I tucked my hands into my sleeves. Not only was it cold, it was dark. Out here, in the middle of nowhere, there were no streetlights and the fog didn't help. I looked around but there was nothing to see; only dead trees. I would have been scared if John wasn't with me. I knew that leaving the party early was a mistake. Now, John and I were completely lost, walking aimlessly.

John wore a brown coat to protect him from the cold. I, on the other hand, only had a sweater and a pair of baggy jeans on. I didn't know what I was thinking when I chose to wear these.

For a while, John and I walked in silence. But then I heard the sound of footsteps coming from behind me.

"Did you hear that?" I asked John.

"Yeah..." He replied quietly. I could hear the fear in his voice.

I looked back to see a figure in a long black coat. I began to speed up. John followed. I looked back again and found that the figure in black was gone. As relieved as I was, I couldn't think of what the figure might've been. It couldn't have been my imagination because John had seen it too. Opening my mouth to ask what John thought, I realized he was no longer beside me. Frantically scanning my surroundings, fear built up inside me. I was now completely alone. Until something caught my eye. The figure in black had returned.

Sprinting in the opposite direction, I looked back regularly. The figure in black was inhumanly quick. I begged my body to go faster but it couldn't. My legs were beginning to cramp. I ducked into the forest hoping I could escape the figure in black. I swerved through the forest, dodging branches and stones.

As I stopped to catch my breath, I listened for footsteps. The forest was completely silent. No chirping crickets or scurrying squirrels. It was odd but I tried not to think about it. The important thing was that I was safe... for now. But grief lingered in my chest because even though there were no more madmen chasing after me, John had disappeared and I had no means of survival.

I checked my cell phone. There was no service, just as I had suspected. I leant on a large rock and sat down. Black clouds began to roll in, covering up the moon and the stars. I began to drift off. But just then, I heard a twig snap.

Peeking from behind the stone, I couldn't see anything. It was too dark. I used the light from my phone to reveal that there was nothing there. The wind whistled softly, rustling the tree branches and the fallen leaves. I clenched my eyes shut, trying to clear my head. Suddenly, something heavy dropped onto my shoulder. It was a hand wearing a black glove. The arm was covered by the thick sleeve of a black coat. I dared not look up, but my body insisted. I lifted my chin. As my vision moved upwards, towards the figure's face, a feeling of happiness struck me.

It was John! I was positively ecstatic.

John helped me up. "Let's go home, buddy." He said, dusting off the dirt on my sweater. I was ready to follow him out of the forest...

But wait... John was wearing a brown coat.
