A Letter to Walter White

Dear Walt,

I heard that you have been diagnosed with irreversible lung cancer. So sorry to hear that! However, engaging in illegal activities and dodging the law to make some cash is not the answer to your problems. I understand that you and your family are financially struggling right now, but using your talents to manufacture drugs and is immoral and it's sad to see you sitting on a throne of lies.

I know that you think you are doing the right thing by providing for your family in fear of your situation snowballing out of your control and affecting your loved ones. But producing and distributing meth is morally wrong. It can harm you more than you think. White lies turn into words on which your life may depend. Your safety might be on the line as well. You can't get away with it, Walt. You think that everything will be just fine, but before you know it, you've been blindsided by the lifestyle you fell into.

There are two kinds of evil that control you. Physical evil, which would explain the horrible and unfortunate cancer, and moral evil, which makes your choices weaker than your potential for the fullness of life, truth, and goodness. There is a way to get out of this vicious and misleading way of life. Seek God for help because he knows what is best for us and how we can prosper.

Sad things have occurred since you transformed into another person. God's plan for you was to use your abilities to make progress in the field of chemistry. However, I think you became greedy and used them for the better (in your opinion, anyway). Sin has consumed your thoughts and actions because now you are thirsty for power and pride.

You have to remind yourself that God instilled logos in you. Logos gives you the ability to see logic in your existence. We were all made in God's image, and he is good. God is truth and beauty and the summit of our lives. He is the only one who can show you your path. He does this through the 10 Commandments, which exemplify Revealed Law. God never wanted you to kill, have no other gods before Him, and steal or do anything unlawful. He means you should never succumb to the god of materialism and greed. At first you might've been distracted by the attractiveness of money, which is something you will have plenty of as a result of the meth empire. In your mind, money is equivalent to happiness. I mean, it's hard to resist money! But with success comes at a price and material items won't bring you pure joy. There were definitely barriers in the way of your plan, and you took matters into your own hands. Can you really justify your wrong actions, though? You claim to have done everything "for the family" but your actions hurt them. Your family was put in many dangerous situations, with their safety at risk.

What you can do to correct your moral situation is by going to confession and seeking the help of others who can guide you to God. God is always forgiving even if you committed grave sins, because God doesn't immediately shun you. By confessing your wrongdoings, you can feel better about your past. There is a fine line between good and bad in every person. But if you cross into the bad side, it is hard to get out. In your case, there was no stopping your downward spiral.

I hope that I helped you understand your circumstances better and explain to you why your actions are immoral and not commendable. I know that you had your family in mind when doing all of these bad things but that does not make your actions honorable. I hope you seek God for help in returning to the past version of yourself, one who was honest, kind, and someone who wouldn't even lay a finger on a fly.
