Castlevania

Castlevania is a game I've always heard of but never played for myself. I don't know much about it other than it's a Nintendo NES game for the NES about a warrior named Simon Belmont. While out and about during sunset, I stumbled upon upon a yard sale with two tables up that had stacks of used NES games. Castlevania was one of the games, among other classics like Tetris, Donkey Kong Jr., and Street Fighter II (bootleg). I decided to buy the game since I figured it would be fun to play it on my Nintendo system collecting dust at home. The yard sale was run by a man who looked like Scruffy from the movie Home Alone. He had an odd look to him, like he didn't want me to see his face. I approached him and asked how much the game was. "Take it. It's free." he said with a scowl. The way he looked at me when he said this sent a chill down my spine.

"W-why, sir?"

"Because I like your shirt. Blood red is my favorite color."

I felt guilty not paying the man, but he creeped me out so bad I took the game and ran out of there. I kept looking behind to make sure he wasn't following me. Thankfully, he wasn't. I examined my Castlevania cartridge further, because there's no way a sane person would give away this rare classic for free. The cover was lightly torn and has some scuff marks on it. But what really freaked me out was the terrifying vampire-like face on the cover art. There's no way it's in the actual game, a tattoo artist probably drew it on there. I kinda don't want to play this game anymore, but there's no way I'm going to return it back to the creepy old man. I don't want to throw it in the garbage either, because it's a classic game. I'm sure I could sell it to some sucker on eBay for $30 bucks anyway.

I arrived home as the night sky swept across my small town like a dark storm cloud. The dead trees in the front lawn creaked from the chilly wind as I stepped foot in the house. I peaked out the curtains to once again make sure the man didn't follow me home. I set the game aside and laid on the couch to catch my breath. As I sat there, I felt like something was watching me. I glared at the game and instantly knew that's where the source was coming from. This game has such negative energy surrounding it and I don't like it one bit. But this could all just be in my mind. That old man has just gotten me so paranoid right now. I'll play the game and see if it makes me feel better or... worse.

My hands trembled as I shoved the dusty old cartridge in to the NES. "Here goes nothing..." I say to myself before pressing the power button. The game began with Simon Belmont walking toward the entrance of a creepy castle then entering in. Already the game has a creepy vibe, which certainly doesn't calm my nerves. The first controllable area was in a long stretch of the castle's exterior. There were no enemies or nothing, which really disturbed me. Suddenly a loud scratching noise came from the game, which made me drop my controller in fear. But it turns out it was just a tree branch scraping against my window. Anyway, the section lasted about 20 seconds before finally making it inside the castle. This is where the wheels came off.

I was immediately greeted by three horrifying zombie-like creatures in white gowns charging straight at Simon. I feared for him in this moment as the creatures attacked him and drained his health. My heart sank in my stomach when they finally got the best of him. This is totally messed up. What kind of Nintendo game would have something like this? There's no way this isn't a bootleg or hacked game. I couldn't bear the horror any longer so I shut the game off. As soon as I did this, there were three heavy knocks at the door. My spirit jumped out of my body then quickly returned. My skin grew pale and my heart was beating faster than a kick drum in a metal song. Who would be at the door at this hour? Well, time to swallow my fear and face it.

A tall, scruffy old man stood in the doorway with a pale grin on his face. "You forgot this." he raised his hand forward holding a severed organ from my body. Before I could scream, I noticed it was actually my phone. I stood there shaking as tears streamed down my face. My jittering hand grabbed a hold of the phone from his cold hands. He gave me a blank stare and walked off. I went through my phone to make sure he didn't tamper it with his creepiness. My veins pulsated out of my body looking for anything weird put in my phone, but I came across nothing. But I know he did. I just know it.

I no longer feel safe, not even in my own skin. My biggest fear was running into a bad situation with a stranger and it happened. I'm not going outside anymore. I can't do it. I crawled to my tiny basement and began digging big holes in the walls. I'm going to live in the basement walls for my own safety. The outside world, and even the first floor of my house is too dangerous. That game and that man are evil and want to hurt me. I couldn't save Simon from the horror and I can't save myself from it either. How much do I value my life? I'll find out in the next couple days.

Don't play Castlevania.
