The Beginning

It was the usual routine I had for any other day: Wake up, get a snack and immediately get on the computer to do God knows what. Whether it be watching YouTube, or looking up an emulator or game of sorts, my eyes were practically glued to the screen the moment I laid hands on the keyboard. Now to start things off:

Yes my computer usually has problems, but nothing too serious. Usually it works itself out. Today however, nothing was happening out of the ordinary. I was thinking to myself: "Huh... guess my computer decided to shut the hell up today." Anywho I got off the computer and decided to go for a stroll. I grabbed my wallet and decided I would hit the local Computer Store.

When I got there after the short walk, I noticed a sign in the window. It read: "Now Selling used games. CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP" So I dropped in to talk to Frank about the sign in the window. "Well Jake, I got a shipment of used games the other day, so I figured I would sell 'em." I saw the box on the counter so I decided to look at what he had to offer.

There were some old 8-bit cartridges in there some CD-ROMS, and some Floppies for old DOS Games. Games that were point-and-click, FPS, etc etc. What caught my eye though, was an unmarked Floppy Disk. I asked Frank what this one was, but he said he didn't check any of these games out. Although, he let me have the one Floppy Disk, free of charge, which I thought was rather peculiar, but I decided to take the offer.

The Troubles

Anyway, when I got up to my room after getting home, I found my computer to be powered off. It must have crashed... again... But never fear, I had a recovery disk for this. When I was digging around in my lockbox for it, I heard the familiar Windows XP startup sound. I slightly jumped at the sound and started wondering what the fuck could have made my system boot up on it's own. But then I remembered that the Power Button would sometimes jam in if pressed too hard. I started thinking that maybe my computer hadn't crashed, but that my mom went in and turned it off.

I guess she just pressed the power button a bit too hard and jammed it. But I guess it unjammed itself after turning back on. Anywho, I decided to pull out the old 3 1/4" Floppy Drive and pop this bad boy in, curiosity tearing at my brain.

At first, the drive wouldn't take the damn thing because of "Insufficient System Memory". Insufficient system memory my ass. I had this computer loaded with a 5 Terrabyte HDD. And 15 Gigabytes of RAM. So after a couple tries, it finally accepted the damn floppy disk.

When the explorer window opened to view the contents of the disk, I noticed 3 .txt files, 1 .avi file, and 1 .wav file. In tota, 5 items. I decided to start with the .txt files. The first being called "Instructions". There were ony 3 steps:

1. Follow directions to the letter. Failure to do so will result in punishment.

2. Don't stop watching the .avi NO MATTER WHAT! Watch until the end.

3. At the end of the .avi, never and I mean NEVER... NEVER TURN AROUND!

I scoffed at this list of instructions. I'm not exacty superstitious, so this made me laugh. However, while I was laughing, my computer started making this grinding sound. The only way I can describe it is.... well... you ever put you rear up to a computer tower and listen to the harddrive, as the needle in it goes to work? Well imagine that sound, but amplified to the point to where I had to grab my ears in pain, just hoping it would stop. Thankfully it did.

Fearful to open the 2nd .txt file, I continued on. What I discovered in the .txt was a list of names. Mosst of these names I didn't recognise that is.. until I saw the name of one of my best friends. His name is Todd. We go way back. But why was his name on here he was listed as number 30.

What I discovered in the 3rd and fina .txt is what shocked me the most. Numbers 1-30 were marked as either 'dead' or 'alive'. Number 30.... Todd... was marked as dead.

I was now on the verge of tears.

I remembered Todd hadn't been around for about a month. Everyone in town wondered where he had gone to. Well, after that emotional breakdown, my computer monitor started flashing on an off on its own accord. At this point I was getting scared, well getting passed scared. The screen suddenly cut to black. After what seemed like hours of staring at a black screen, it started to slowly fade into the image of a face... but not just ANY face it was the face of Todd... only... twisted and mangled.

It was at this point that I swear to God you could smell dead and decaying flesh. I gagged at the mere smell, trying to hold back the urge to vomit. And I shit you not, the face started to talk. Thats when I noticed my computer had opened the .avi on its own. The .avi was called "Todd".

As I watched in horror, all the face said was: "Hello, Jake. I'm so happy to see you." At that point I was thinking

"Ok... this is beyond fucked up." As I reached down to pull the Floppy out of the drive, the computer suddenly started smoking. The Disk Drive had melted shut. I couldn't comprehend how that happened. It had to of been whatever presence was in my computer. At first I thought it might be BEN from this CreepyPasta I read, but it couldn't be. This presence seemed much... Darker...

Finally I remembered the instructions. Do not turn around.... but then I remembered I had a gun hidden under the foor.

I bent down, opened the floor, and there it was. My loaded 9mm. It was all ready to fire. I emptied an entire clip on the computer. The deed was done.

I turned around and to my surprise nothing happened.

Epilouge

As I write this down er.... type.... please note that I am doing this on a new computer. I trashed the old one AND the Foppy drive that came with it. But to this day, every night I try to sleep. I still see that horrible face of my old friend Todd. I wake up at night to the smell of rotting flesh. But I also smell burnt plastic.

I guess I should have listened to mother's saying of "Don't take stuff that you don't know where it's been." And as for that .wav file. I'm not even going to bother posting it here. The sound of it still pains me. I don't want you to suffer either.
