Every story is based on something, take a look at Assassin's Creed.

Assassin's creed is based on Edgar Allan Poe's work, it's about the Templars, who are an evil organization that wants to kill or control anyone in their way and they are fighting the Assassins, another Illuminati style organization except that the Assassins are the "good guys".

Now, you're probably wondering what those articles linked have to do with this, luckily for you, I can explain: in The Cask of Amontillado, one of the characters is a freemason, and in The Pit and the Pendulum, the protagonist mentions that the torture devices were employed by monks.

Now what does this have to do with anything? Just compare the freemason logo with the Assassin logo, and now find some actual historical facts about the knights templar. They were monks.
