Erika

You see her name was Erika she was a normal enough ten year old girl, she had brown eyes, brown long hair and very tan almost Latin skin. Erika and I have spent some quality time together and I grew to know her well, She liked to read, she wanted to be a singer when she grew up and her crush's name was Thomas. I knew everything about her.

Erika first met me while walking to school one day. She was alone and crying. She needed someone. You see, her mother came home this morning drunk and angry again. No ten year old needs makeup but Erika was crying quite profusely and her cover up started to run leaving behind the blemishes of her mothers morning lash out plainly visible.

Nothing was more obvious then this little girl was needing help, needing a friend, and needing me.

"Hello little girl" I said to her. She jumped in fear. "Uhm hello?" She said in a sob trying to swallow her tears. "Are you okay?" I proceeded to ask. "I'll be fine. It's just... nothing." "You can tell me. You can trust me. Besides, I already know" "Just.. leave me alone I don't want to talk!" She yelled at a sign. "I'll be here for when you do."

She continued her day normally without even thinking about me. She arrived at school. Did her work. Passed all she did with A's, and even hung out with her friends during the recesses. Everything was great for her that day at school.

After the final bell let out she started her slowed apathetic walk to the exit. Fear was taking over her mind and she only hoped to hold in the tears until she was away from her peers at least. As soon as the distance between her and her school friends was great enough. She started crying and slowing her pace home even more.

As she approached the path from the sidewalk to her home her heart started racing in anticipation to the "beast" that awaits on the other side. She opened her front door and relief washed over her. Erika's was mother passed out on the couch. A brief examination sugjested that the wrath of the morning had subdued after she left for school. Erika was confident that her mother would remain in the statue state for atleast another hour.

Erika was hungry. She walked into her kitchen sneaking past her mother and walking straight towards the fridge, no hint of surprise in her eyes as she opened the door to find nothing more then an old half full thing of mustard , an un-open jar of beets and an empty carton of eggs.

I had to talk to her again, "Are you sure you're okay?" I asked. "Stop showing up you don't know whats wrong! You don't know what it's like!" She fell to the corner of her near-empty kitchen then hugged her knees in a silent cry. "Erika, no one knows your pain. No one knows what that harpy has done to you! And no one will stand by your side. But here I am, and there I was earlier when you know you needed me but you refused it. And I'm still here." "I...I guess that's true. But I don't even know you."

"You don't need to know me Erika you just need to know I'm here and I'll always be here." Erika nodded, stood up, and walked up her stairs to her bedroom where she grabbed a few of her favourite books and a change of clothes then stuffed them into her backpack and returned downstairs.

A smile was on her face, a beautiful smile. Colours on her skin were showing that were hidden for years, so radiant, so vibrant as if this poor girl had seen sunlight for the first time after years of incarceration. Her giggle was so sweet as she lifted the butchers knife above her sleeping mothers stomach. "Good night Mommy hehe" "Sleep well."
