Hell Bringers

One day, I was browsing through ROMs and I saw one ROM that seemed very peculiar. The ROM was named "Hell Bringers" and it was supposedly for the NES. Now, I have always been a fan of Nintendo and I had seen my fair share of NES games, but I had never seen a game called Hell Bringers. I clicked on the ROM and it prompted me to download the emulator "ROMer", which the name alone was just out of the ordinary. I downloaded it and played the ROM. Some 8-bit death metal started playing and it seemed normal for the game's title. The Words "HELL BRINGERS!!!" Rose from the bottom of the screen, followed by 2 Pixelated, Angry looking, muscly men. I ignored this and pressed start. The game had 8 levels. Level 1 was the only unlocked level, so I clicked on it. Blood dripped down from the top of the screen, and the level started. It started out with you walking down a dark hallway. Then the men from the title screen broke through a nearby window and proceeded to torch my body. "Oh, I get it. The "Hell bringers" are enemies that you have to escape form." I thought to myself.

A grotesque pixelated picture of a burnt body faded in and the words "YOU DIED" appeared, written in blood. I thought, "I guess this was a T or M game when it was released." The picture had a few bones showing, half of your face was melted off, and a few organs were showing at the stomach. I dismissed the image and pressed continue.

The level reset and I noticed that you can pick up shards of broken glass form the window. I picked up the largest one and used the attack key on the first man. He was hit, some red pixels sprayed out and he started cringing in pain. He collapsed on the floor with a pained expression on his face. The second man rushed at me with full speed but I held out the glass and it was driven through his heart, tearing it, or what I thought was a heart, out of his body and onto the shard. He simply slumped backwards and hit the ground with a large group of red pixels flying up. "Ok, this is DEFINETLY a Mature game." I thought. The words, "Well done" appeared at the bottom of the screen. I actually said, out loud, "Who is that?" when it happened. My brother in the other room said, "What? Who are you talking to?" I replied with "no-one, sorry bro." Level 2 was unlocked, and I clicked on it and a cut scene loaded. May I remind you, the cut scenes were not badly pixelated and were pretty good looking. In the cut scene, your character had a crazed expression on his face and he had a knife. You were in a prison cell with one other man in it. He looked, frightened. I think it was you scaring him. A text box appeared saying, "Get away you asshole!" Your character stopped moving completely. He didn't breath, flinch his muscles, nothing. He then slowly, turned to the terrified man. He raised his knife and grabbed the man's shirt collar. He then drove the knife into his eye and left it there as he let go of the man. He slumped to the floor as blood trickled down his face and the level started. I was creeped out at this point.

I called my brother out to see this and he unwillingly came into the room. He immediately said, "What the hell do you want?" I told him, "Look at this weird ROM." He knew what a ROM was since we have a HUGE collection of them on our pc's. He told me, "Yeah, what about it? Is it scawing you?" he said in a baby voice. "Shut up" I told him. "I downloaded this ROM called "Hell Bringers" from a website and it is really strange. Here look." I told him the controls and he started playing level two. "When I started out, the guy you play as looked completely manic and he shoved a knife into his prison cell mate's eye." My brother said, "Hmm. Strange..." The two men appeared and started chasing him. He proceeded to stab both men through stomach and the voice from before told him, "Keep going." This time, it wasn't the end. Four people with machetes came out of nowhere and started swinging. My brother ran up and attacked one and then another pixilated cut scene played. He round house cut his head off and then stabbed another in the arm. The man dropped his weapon in pain but still kicked the player to the ground. While I was watching this happen, your face was getting more and more manic. I was starting to expect this was really never for the NES. From what I remember, there were no such thing cut scenes in NES games, but I kept going with it. My brother seemed to think nothing of it. A NES game with a Conker's Bad Fur Day scenario.

The cut scene ended, and level 3 was unlocked. But it didn't let my brother continue. It had the option "CONTINUE ON" front and center and it was selected but no matter what, it wouldn't do a thing. "Bullshit!" my brother screamed. This was strange. My brother was used to having this stuff happen on ROMS and was never angered by it. He had always been very calm and had quickly gotten over it. Then, the game crashed. "ROMer" closed and we were taken to the desktop. Currently, "ROMer" won't open anymore. Me and my brother are still working on it. I'll keep you informed on how it goes.​​
